Pro-Filer SBC Heads
Dropped off my heads and valves at the machine shop just to get the guides opened up a bit. My measurements showed them pretty tight. They called me back in less then 24 hours to tell me they were done. When I got there to pick up, the lady/owner up front said their head guy wanted to talk to me. Met with him and learned the intakes needed nothing and were at .0014 to .0016 but he opened up the exhaust some to .0018 to .0019. He told me when he saw the write up sheet and "Pro" he automatically thought procomp, generic China heads. He wasn't familiar with Pro-Filer. After inspecting them and finding the guides surprisingly straight with nearly no taper, he was very impressed and looked up the heads himself. He told me with big eyes that they deal Brodix, AFR, Dart, etc. and he rarely sees guides this nice and alwas has to work them more. I gave him some of the background and info I knew of Pro-Filer and he seemed pretty interested.
We also discussed the other components of the valvetrain that I was going to be using for assembling the heads and my build details. He gave me a compliment and said I really did a good job with the combination and cam / valvetrain match. Mentioned a lot of guys dropping of some off the wall garbage compilations when trying to do themselves. Was good to hear as this is the first time I've done a bare head assembly. Told him I'm a perfectionist and if I'm not sure of something I'll research the hell out of it until I know it's right.
Anyway just thought I'd share the positive Pro-Filer review. (Although there is plenty on the Web if you are not familiar. Also Chad Speier who I mentioned to the shop guy to check out)

I use to stock their manifolds years ago.......they use lost foam casting technique......very smooth and precise....but most cost overall.
They make the nicest cast tunnel ram I have ever seen.
We built a couple of 632's with their 18 degree stuff.....made great power out of the box with a tuned up valve job....no porting.
Do not see a lot of their stuff out there though......good to know that they pay attention to their little guy stuff too.....important in my book.

I really think "Pro" hurts the initial opinion from those not familiar.

The 23 SBC casting have tons of potential. Chad Speier has a few programs that are top notch and proven power makers. More and more people are running them in serious builds as rules in small tire heads up classes are very favorable to 23* low port engine combinations.
I have a set of Chads V2.7PF on my 434 in my small tire class car. It's a dedicated nitrous engine but still made 755hp@7400RPM all motor. Car runs high 9s @ 140mph on motor drug down against a tight NO2 converter, powerglide and 3.89 gear. Runs low 8s on a single stage. 1984 Corvette, 3100lbs on a 275 radial tire, street legal and street driven. Pics of the car in my profile and yes thats it in my avatar.
For those who don't know. Profiler is owned by Ray Franks a former NHRA Pro Stock racer/Engine builder. Ray also owns HTC which is an aerospace casting manufacturing company. All Profiler heads are cast and machined in Ohio, USA.

Haven't heard a bad word about these heads. It take time but we will be seeing more and more of their heads if they keep up the good work

I'm pretty sure these are done by the Canfield Ohio foundry that made Canfield heads.....these were also sold by several outfits under other names....Holley System Maxx and Jegs I believe. They have a good reputation and with Chad Spiers rework they have some good honest flow numbers....I really like the fact that unlike AFR you can get them bare and buy your own quality parts to install.

Sadly we lost a friend and neighbor recently who ran Pro Filers on his BBC 8 second Chevelle. The first time I met Donovan I was picking up my kid at his house and he heard my car rumbling up the drive and came out to see. He was so tickled to see the Pro Filer 195s I have on my 385 he just had to go in and tell the wife! lol
Anyway, I saw numerous flow comparisons with the AFRs and I've had no regrets choosing Pro Filer. With a modest cam (Howards HR .230/.235) I get 486hp on the crank and 500lbs throughout the mid-range without hardly trying.

HTC is the foundry. HTC is owned by Ray Franks who also owns "Profiler". HTC is located in New Carlisle, OH.
John Fenton owned "Canfield". He designed, mfgr'd and owned the core boxes for all the "Canfield" castings. That actual core box tooling was located at HTC and the heads were cast at HTC for him when canfield was still in business.
John retired in 2009 and at that time a few people were interested in buying his Canfield core boxes and some were sold off... SBF specifically.... I don't know of anyone who bought the SBC tooling.
I know in 2010, Cary Chouinard at Performance Induction bought the 18* SBF tooling.
Also In 2010, DSS Racing bought the 20* SBF tooling.
There is also someone else who is currently manufacturing with the old Canfield BBC core boxes. You can still buy new castings but I don't know who that is, if they are on a license or actually own the BBC tooling... I only know who you can buy them from.
Now John also did some core boxes for the BMF BBC heads but that tooling was/is owned by Carl Foltz at CFE racing Products who also owns BMF. The casting for those heads is also done at HTC.
I think that about covers how incestuous a major portion of the cyl head manufacturing business is.

I know this was last year but anything to add to this? I'm seriously considering these heads if my stock intake will match up to them. E-mail inquiry and phone call both in to Pro-Filer but no response yet.
My other option is Dart SHP which according to Dart will match up no problem with my intake.

Profilers over the SHP get bare castings like Ibanez then you know what you have
Own some Darts they are decent....if you want to do more work to them even better.
Canfields were good heads in their day
Wish there was more 18 deg stuff around for the sbc not everyone wants an LSx like the gen1 platform doesnt have to cost a fortune in comparison
Maybe there is and I havent looked often enough.
