First impression of new 3.55 gears
Finally got around to installing the 3.55 rear end that I picked up from a forum member quite some time ago. It replaced the original, stock 3.08 pumpkin.
I didn't really expect all that much of a difference but was quite pleasantly surprised. Quite a noticeable improvement on acceleration. Didn't get it out on the highway yet so not sure if I'll notice increased noise, but my anemic Mexican built SBC sure feels a lot better. It'll probably be fall before I finish and instal my 427 SBC but think that'll be a great match for the new gears.

Way to go. I think it will be a good match with a 427. What kind of tranny do you have behind it?

3.55 gears
I changed the 3.08 gears out of my 75 to 3.55 about a year ago . This year more upgrades Afr 195 heads ,comp cam xe288hr , Vic jr intake and 3000 plus convertor . Still testing and tuning but this is what it did today very happy with gears and motor upgrades .

When going from 308 to 355 what kind of a difference did it make in your fuel economy ? I would like to change my ring and pinion but I was concerned about gas expense issues.

My second guess is you installed a hot cam that destroyed your low end torque. All our 71 and up engines with low compress need to use a towing or RV cam specs or you loose it all off the line.

My first guess is your engine has something wrong with it because a v6 can light em up with that gearing.

70 mph went from 1,900 rpm in 5th to 2,300. 2,300 is not high enough to hurt fuel economy. Might even be a little better as my cam is happier above 2,000 rpm.

I noticed an increase in fuel mileage when I changed to the 3.55 gears went from average of 14 mpg to 15 mpg . This year may be different story adding an extra 115 hp in the last month , but smiles per gallon may go way up

Power is still power, but the stall rating has a lot to do with how fast you get up to the power band. Modern efficient 9.5 inch with stalls in the mid 3000 really work well

I haven't had it out for a long, highway drive yet so no data on fuel economy. I'd be surprised if I had the same experience as Zwede or gvelt but I'd be fine with it. Rather, I expect some drop. I'm more concerned about a significant increase in side pipe noise. It's kind of loud at high revs.
I'm very close to being able to spin the tires off the line, but as hugie suggested, the motor that I picked up a few years back has a huge cam in it. Does well at the high revs that I never use but is a bit of a slug off the line.
