True indeed, but if it is a 3.08 the math is way out...the numbers i did in my post are with a 3.08 and measured tire size......also,there is no reason to doubt that Mr.Ddawg's vette hasn't had a diff change in the last 20 years...there is a great section in Chevy Hiperformance with all the relevant formulae.....the only other poss explanation would be if his tires were SUBSTANTIALLY less diameter than 27.1"(standard size)...my guess is that if the tires are standard, the diff is 3.55....if Ddawg gives us his tire size and rpm at indicated speed and gear, then it is simple to bactrack and calculate the diff ratio assuming the speedo is accurate.....if there has been a diff change & the speedo drive hasnt been adjusted then the numbers will be way out.....my guess is that is what has happened...john :chevy ;)

To my knowledge the 82 has a 2.87 rear.
At 4400rpm in 4th gear, your speed would be around 175mph....
At 2300rpm it should have been around 90mph.....

If you were in 3rd, it should have been around 65 and 120mph, at least this is closer to your results

There is, as you pointed out, a large non-linearity between your measurements.
Most probably your tach/speedometer is way out of calibration.
Or you have a converter and/or lockup problem

To test the lockup, hit the brakes while engine is under load in 4th gear (going uphill) and see if the rpm increase.
If not, your lockup isn't working.
