Mini Starters weigh about 8 pounds I think. The 68 L36 used to eat a reman every year or so. I bought a Summit house brand mini when they came out. Dang! After installation, I kissed the key to check the wiring. Dang thing fired right up! So easy to install (you can clock the body). And powerful. One of the best mods ever, in my opinion.

Any advantage to using a mini in a stock 350/270?
Thanks

My predicament is obviously not the norm. The 9100 just aint going to work for my application. I'm giving Powermaster a call this morning and hopefully gain a better understanding regarding my delimma. I'm thinking the 9200 might be for me because in pictures it resembles closely the big Delco that is on the car now, especially the nose and staggered bolt hole mounting. I have a 168 tooth starter ring but I believe the 153 is much more common on these small blocks.

Do you know how to clock the starter?

I have too much gap between starter pinion and flexplate ring gear. This gap in which I'm referring is axially. I have a scenario that even Powermaster has never dealt with and says the 9200 will not cover the distance either. It possibly out of spec factory machining tolerances. I know how to clock the starter and would clock it if it would make a difference. I will keep you posted.

If you mean the throw/extension of the gear, then I'd say your starter is defective. I had a identical ebay starter where it wouldn't retract enough, even after shimming the body back from the mounting plate of the starter.

Looks like correct Powermaster part number is 3510 (stock size) or 9526 or 9612 mini's.

It sounds like both you and now Powermaster are really missing the obvious. If you have a staggered bolt mounting pattern on their now (which I have also) then you have to replace it with a starter with a staggered bolt mounting pattern. The 9100 will not work, but the 9200 should fit fine if for a 168 tooth flywheel (which I have also). Just google pictures of the two or go on Summit and compare. The staggered bolt mounting pattern easily sticks out a good 1.5 inches from the bolt locations. Your block, tranny, flywheel, all standard stuff. Nothing special here.
That's kinda why I posted the vid I can only assume he is using the hole that is too far back if it's not defective. Still I think he should be able to use the correct holes if he clocks it.

Look at the difference in the starter mounting pads/patterns. The OP is trying bolt on an in-line mount starter where a staggered mount starter goes. That won't work. Clocking will not change the mounting pads/patterns.
Staggered 9526
Staggered 9200
Inline 9100 like the OP has

Look at the vid that bock and blocks I've used had both patterns, you don't have to change what already is!
