Default Is it a bad thing if....

Is it a bad thing if, when you shift from 2nd to 3rd at full throttle, the rear tires make a solid chirp??? This happened to me last night, and yes I'm being a bit facitious :D

I usually don't talk much about my car here but since I put in the new TH400 and upgraded my torque converter I was waiting to put on some break-in milage before putting it to the test. Last night I had a clear level on-ramp & took a shot at it. Don't even ask about traction in 1st gear cuz it's not there- I sort of expected that. But I was surprised, over the sound of the motor, to hear the tires rip loose going into 3rd. All in all a very pleasant surprise. Just sharing one of those Corvette moments. :yesnod:

I burn all of overdrive. :jester

Well, Les, now that you've bragged a bit, I'm going to videotape the race between you and Chuck. How's that sound? :)

I think you owe me a ride soon! You've been bragging too much. ;)

Sounds awesome!

Thanks Terry. I've thought about stepping up to bigger rims but I really like the ones I have now. I'm due for tires pretty soon. I'm pretty sure I'll stay w/ the 15 inchers & put Yokohama 295/50X15s on the back(after moving the E-brake bracket). They're "T" rated- as good as it gets these days. They got the best reviews, by a fair margin, in their class on the Tire Rack survey. They'll give me another 2" of meat back there, which should help. :)

Steve,
You're starting to sound way to much like Chuck now(giving me a bad time!) ;) My only hope against his car would be if he got stuck in 1st gear! That's a matchup you'll never see- unless he promises to run 5" wide tires in the back
I'm looking into either a Hurst or B&M shifter to make gear selection a sure thing. Once that's done you'll definitely get a ride!

I'll have to give you a ride in mine. I've only screwed up shifting... once, in the lifetime of driving my car.

You're a manual shifter like me then, I trust?

Les,

Are those wheels of the American Racing 200S variety? When I bought mine they were only available in 15" but I just checked today and they now have a 17" version. I can't imagine exactly what they look like but they shouldn't be too different. Just a thought. I like mine too.

Yes, I usually shift manually Steve. And gee, such good news that you & Chuck think alike :cry

Cookwithvette,
Thanks for the info- I wasn't aware of that. I searched around for tires that would be the right height w/ enough width for my needs on the 17" rims & wasn't finding anything. I'll look again when I have more time.

Stevo,
Thanks!!! By the way, my brother lives up in Sebastapol & my aunt lives in Cotati. I end up driving past you a few times a year. I like it up there & may retire somewhere in the area. One of the reasons is that Sears Point is so close.
Also, the AR's look great on your car- mine was painted black when I bought the rims & I always thought they went very well together.

My friends make fun of me for my freeway behavior. Downshift to third gear and let the pedal hit the floor.

He arched his back as if it were rocket-like acceleration, and said that's how I pass people. :) He makes fun of the ratchety noises my shifter makes when I drive. Stoplight- clack clack clack.

Really though, Les, I'm glad to hear that great minds shift alike!

Les, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like your ARs are the same as mine.
They are chrome plated steel rims with an alloy center section. I think I paid under a 100 bucks apiece for them. The newer 200s like the ones on Cookwithvette's car are polished aluminum (which I think look better) but are a lot more $$ and do come in 17"

Hey Les, I don't believe it for a second!!! :jester I think a demonstration with an unbiased passenger will be needed. It's a tough job, but I'd be willing to do that for you. :D

Seriously though, it sounds like the other tranny going south on ya was a good thing in the end.

With any luck, I'll be able to get up there to see ya in the next week or two.

Tom
