Default Dougs sidepipes are baffling me

Installing a new set of Dougs ceramic side mount headers and pipes on my 78. I got the headers on fine. But how the heck do you get the sidepipes on without the t bolts falling into the frame when you're lining up the muffler? I keep pushing the t bolts into the frame then have to retrieve them with a magnet.

Man I had that same frustration. I used a long thin screw driver to try to hold those t-bolts in while I threaded the nut on. I ended up trimming down some of the rubber bushings on the drivers side, it was the only way I could get the nut started.

You're not alone. It is possible, but it is frustrating.

I really want to come up with a way to mount the side pipes with some sort of quick disconnect so I can take them off easily. Once I got them finally bolted up I felt like I would never want to take them off.

I made thin nut out of aluminum to hold the bolts, worked very well.

Are the bolts/mounting kit not the same as the Hoooker side pipes? The Hookers have a rubber bushing that is a tight fit over the bolt and holds the bolt pretty firmly in place.

This, and a little RTV on the rubber bushing. Thin jamb nuts from Lowes or Home Depot work well too. Put the thin nut on, then a washer. then the rubber bushing.

I tied a piece of dental floss to the bolt.

The hookers are the same way.

I thought my cute little invention was my own...apparently EVERYONE came up with the idea of creating (or purchasing) a thin jam nut to hold stuff in place.

I made mine with a grinder and a beer.
