Default '71 454 "Economy" Rear Ratio

Hi:

I seem to remember that in 1971 GM offered an economy rear end ring and pinion---I think it was 2.74 or so. I don't see these gears listed anywhere, and am wondering whether anyone knows of a source. Also, would a 2.72 from an 80-81 differential fit?

Thanks,
/s/ Chris Kennedy

If you look at a Corvette catalog they offer rears and gears from 2:73 up. If you are looking around for used 3:08 are available.

I run the 3:08 with a non OD 5 spd trans and sometimes wish for a 6th gear!

I've never seen 2.73 gears anywhere. 3.08 and up is what's available.

I've had 308 in my 74 big block 427 and it was a nice driver but on today's highways I agree with the above post, you'll be looking for an overdrive. The 3:08 carrier will accept 2:73 gears but I gues the question is will standard GM 2:73 fit a corvette carrier? I think it will but I've never done it. There are a few guys who might chime in that rear diff are their specialty or you can reach out to some of our vendors that eat and sleep corvettes.

Corvettes used unique ring & pinions.

I parted a 69 BB with Th400 that had 2.73 gears that was stamped AY.

Getting an overdrive transmission is a better choice than going to an 'economy' rear gear. Once you have that gear, you're stuck with it. And it's ONLY good for driving at highway speeds.

Get the O/D transmission and you will be happy with it at EVERY speed.
