Hard to say, you sure it's not the rear suspension??? I"d bet it is, well before the tranny....

I had asked you about the heim joint reliability in another thread....in response to your comment about them being unreliable in steeer use due to dirt/grit/etc....
I was wondering what info you have or what your personal experiences were as to fuel your statement....
prompted by my interest in the steeroids rack/pinion kit and my decision to stay away from those joints for my own car...

Brian, Gene,

I remember Brian asking what is steeroids, but I think the heim joints may
have been someone else - or someone else in the same thread.

Anyway - a clunk is usually not typical of a tranny going south - but could be.
First, I would suspect the Ujoints, tranny and motor mounts (rubber deteriorated),
and lastly the many places in the rear suspension that can loosen up.

We need more detailled symptoms.

Does it do it in all forward gears, or just when starting out ?
Can you put ebrake on and torque the drive train up to make the sound
when not moving?
If so - does it do it repeatedly - and can you get someone to listen and isolate area of sound ?
Does it do it in reverse ? Reverse w/ebrake (better block the wheels) ?
Does it do it any other time, or just while accelerating ?

At this rate, your car is going to have NO problems by October.
Every day you're fixing something new. Good for you.

As far as I know....(and I'll take her for a quick spin tonight to confirm)
1. Does not do it in reverse....

Truthfully, the only time I can remember hearing it is in the following situations....driving along around 60, have to slow down to about 45 then when I re-accelerate it will make the noise....or accelerating through a turn...

Make sense? I will take her out tonight and see if it does it any other times.

Ok...it only happens when I mentioned above....when I slow down then accellerate without downshifting.....but the RPMs are not dropping enough to really warrant a downshift in my opinion.....

Any ideas?

I would check all six of the u-joints first. Put the back of the car on a set of ramps (with the front tires WELL CHOCKED) and the trans in neutral. Check for play in all of them.
