'72 rear window tray rattles
The rear window rattles badly when placed in its storage tray. Is the tray supposed to have some kind of lining or bumpers to keep the window from rattling??. I have a piece of carpet in there now but it slips around and doesn't work very well.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Melting Slicks
I'll be back off travel in a couple of weeks and can send a pic then if needed.
The rubber bumper is about 1/2" tall and about 1/2" in diameter with a small tit that fits into the corner tray hole. When the tray is latched closed it puts some good pressure on the rubber bumpers. They could probably be found at the hardware store.
Hope this helps

The bumpers on mine are about the same height, a little smaller in diameter and just put enough pressure on to keep the tray latched tight.
I also lined the tray with some thin felt type material to protect the window frame

There may or may not have also been 2 or three foam PSA pads stuck to the underside of the rear deck itself.
As I recall, there was some discrepancy as to what year and early/late builds had the tray bumpers and which had the square pads and how many there were.
I don't think anyone makes the tray bumpers but there are others that are close and can be trimmed to work

Mine also. I'll look at the tray for bumpers. My solution is once the glass comes out it gets stored in the garage.

I just went to the hardware store looking for the rubber bumpers a couple weeks ago. First, I called around and it took three tries to find someplace that had rubber bumpers. The best I found were not quite as tall and the stem was not as long. I really had to pull on the stem - even used pliers- to get the stem through the hole in the tray.
I ordered the foam pads from Dr Rebuild because, well, they said they were for 72 but after further review I'd say if your tray has the holes at either end you wouldn't use the foam pads.
Also, if your window is rattling - does your tray have a clip in the rear center that the window nestles into?

Mine does have these

This sounds like what I meant. The tray isn't rattling, the window rattles in the tray! I don't have any such clip.

Hi,
My 71 originally had 3 of the square foam pads.
Their purpose however appeared to me to keep the tray from rattling, not to keep the window from rattling in the tray.
I always kept/keep a towel in the tray to wrap around the window to keep it from rattling.
Dr. Rebuild sells a set of similar pads.
Regards,
Alan
2 of the 3 original pads (you can see the imprint the tray frame and rivet left in the pads)
Location (Repro pads)
Clip on rear of tray keeps window from sliding to the rear but doesn't stop it from rattling.
