Need a little help- "What is this pictures"
Need a little help with a "What is this"- with a dash wire I found just hanging out doing nothing
Car: 68 Convertible
Area: Behind Passenger Dash Pad very close to center instrument cluster close to Radio
What I think: because it's a black wire I'm thinking ground, based on connector appears to "plug in"
Pictures
Wire found unattached behind Passenger dash pad close to center cluster.
End view of connector
General area found
Larger view of general area
Thank You everyone.

It looks to be a light socket with broken tabs that would normally hold it in place. I would look to the back of the center cluster or the radio for a hole without a light plugged in it.
If you check a wiring diagram for your car, the black wire may give it away.
Good luck... GUSTO

What color is the wire? Gray is illumination. Your socket is missing the metal retaining clip. If your center cluster rattles, the missing clip is in the cluster.
Do you have the 68 AIM? Mine has a wiring diagram in it.

Yes I do have an AIM, and so far my search through the AIM and through 68 wiring diagram has been inconclusive. I was hoping someone would recognize it.
It doesn't appear to be a broken illumination bulb.

Use a mirror, or a bore scope if you have one to look at the backside of the center cluster. I suspect you will find an open hole.
It is definitely a light socket. Remember that the center cluster has more than just illumination bulbs in it. The top row has 4 slots (2 stacked on each side) of info that use bulbs to provide info.

It's not broken, but the metal retainer that fits inside the plug is missing. It is most likely still attached to an empty hole in the back of your instrument cluster.

agree with the above
agree with the above. I think that is the courtesy light under the dash near the door. pretty sure a black wire goes to it. and as said above the metal press in light socket is missing. hope this helps, you might turn the Corvette on and or open the door and see if you get 12v to ground with a voltmeter.

Thanks everyone for your help. I will let you know as I find where this plugs in. The color of the wire had me thinking not illumination. It is not seat belt as that works, so does door ajar, and parking break.
Again thanks for your help.

In the top picture it looks black which makes me think it's the over-ride bulb socket that haunted my schematic for a year.
When the motor over-ride is turned on (1968 only) the brown/white wire to the switch back feeds voltage and makes this a dangerous wire..... If hooked up properly it will have 12 volts on it when the over-ride switch is on.

Thanks Everyone; Yes as I have come to expect Willcox is correct.. it is the Wiper Over-Ride light. It was right in front of me and I didn't see it. Again thanks everyone for their help, and keep it up, that is what makes the forum great.
