Default Ignition Upgrade

I have a 68 with a lightly modified 327. I'm looking to upgrade my ignition and I'd like to get away from the points. My ultimate goal would be to drop an HEI unit in there but I want to keep the factory ignition shielding on it so I'm guessing that's a bust. Any ideas out there? What have you done?

Overhaul the std distributor and fit a points elimination kit to it. You can get several that have single wire control from the dist to a black box that can be hidden away (the one on my car is smaller than a cigarette packet.

If you want to get rid of the points, get a Pertronix unit. That will fit right into your stock distributor, so no problems with the shielding. If you are convinced you need a hotter spark, you can also install a Pertronix Accel, or other aftermarket coil that is configured just like the stock one and will work with the shielding. Depending on their age, a new set of spark plug wires might also be called for,.

Have Lars rebuild your stock factory distributor and keep your points. I do not think he will install a pertronix in it but you can ask him.

I went with a Breakerless SE electronic conversion kit. Hasn't given me any trouble in 3+ years. Uses one wire as well
