Default Clutch noise-what could it be?

When my clutch pedal is fully released (foot not on it at all), there is a VERY slight whine. You really have to listen for it. It sounds kind of like a power steering pump that is low on fluid. When you push in the clutch, it goes away. You can even just rest your foot on the clutch a bit and it will go away.

What could this be and what do you need to do to fix it? It is annoying.

Is this an adjustment issue, or the first sign of a pending replacement?

Aside from a very hard launch last week, I have noticed no slippage whatsoever.

Thanks.

I have the exact same noise from my clutch and have been wondering what it was.....with the way my luck has been going, it means a new clutch is right around the corner....

I hear ya buddy. I have had my car since May and replaced a lot of stuff-fuel pump, oil pump, brake lines, starter, several vacuum compenents, etc. And my car is in great shape. It just never seems to end. Now this. I am sure you are correct. New clutch needed soon.

Oh I hope not. My clutch seems strong. I cannot make it slip under normal driving conditions (3rd or 4th gear low RPM acceleration). But boy did it slip when I dumped it at 2500 last week. Then I began noticing this new noise. So I am sure I broke something or pushed it closer to its death. Maybe it is the throwout bearing?

How do you replace it? Is it easier to just go ahead and replace everything while you are in there?

Sounds (to me) like your throwout-bearing is heading south. *Could* be that the clutch was adjustet a little too tight and there was permanent load on the bearing. Kills it as sure as sand. New bearing is $20 or so. But changing is probably not fun (Will be changing my clutch soon...)

Good luck!

Cost of the clutch depends on what you go back with. Some of those super strong clutches (Centerforce Dual Friction for example) are $300 plus the throwout which is around $30. This does NOT include labor. I sure cannot do it myself.

It's probably your throwout bearing....

You have to pull the tranny to get to it. Other than that its easy.

You have to pull the tranny. That involves the mounting system, shifter, and tranny itself. Then just to replace the TO bearing is easy.

If you think you need a new clutch that would be the time to put it in along with a new pilot bearing. I had mine out 3 times last week because of a bad throwout bearing that took me a while to figure out why it was touching. While it certainly could be the TO beraing you are hearing, the most common symptom is noise when the clutch is engaged rather than disengaged. For that reason, as long as I had that tranny out I'd replace everything if it's not new already.

What would this cost if you had to pay someone to do it?

Bring her by and I'll show you how to do it. Shouldn't take long to get to Oregon.

It took me about 3 hours to pull my tranny, put in a new clutch and bearing (Centerforce dual friction -- I love it!), and put it back together. It is a lot of work, but not out of reach of most shade tree mechanics.
