When I removed the shifter from my 68, the shifting mechanism was surrounded by a big ball of grease and sand. The grease was basically engine oil that over the years had solidified into grease. I dissembled the shifter mechanism and could see that it had a lot of significant wear caused by sand contamination of the shifter mechanisms. I bought a lot of shifter replacement parts from Volunteer Vette to rebuild my shifter. I did rebuild it. I suppose there are other Corvette vendors that sell replacement/rebuilt parts for the Muncie shifter.
Rebuilding my shifter from all new parts was actually a fun thing to do and it was easy. Uh...well you do have to pay attention to all the shift levers and notches in the mechanism to get it back together. I had another assembled shift lever mechanism to look at to see how to get things back together!
I was really surprised to see the wear in my 68 shifter mechanism, given that it was a very low mileage car. Sand, impregnated into the grease surrounding the shifter mechanism had noticeably caused metallic wearing.
