My 1979 Sale for at Carlisle. Just Fishing. What $?
I recognize that the 1979 is not a prime year but here goes. What would my 1979 go for at Carlisle in US$? Most of you have seen the car. New everything underneath mechanical, interior and new Dupont Chroma Premier paint. Three sets of tops. Runs fine and tracks straight with a new Muskegon front-end kit. New rear GM struts and bearings etc. Watch edits for pics.
Clean stock engine.
Clean original frame and exhaust with SS brake system. The Y-pipe has been removed for new seals, waterpump, oil pump, timing gear set and the like in this pic.
The only numbers that do not match (if that is important for a 1979) are on the alternator and the starter (GM high-torque).

The car looks awesome but we have to be real, the 79 is one of the least desiered vettes, and IMHO you should expect something closer to $10k, but its always wise to ask more of course, I'm just leting you know not to hope for a very big $$$ figure.

Paul,
Your car is awesome...hate to see you getting rid of it, I can only wish mine looked that good. What are you going to buy to fill the void? I think you can easily ask $12k for it. Its a beautiful car. :yesnod:

Juliet,
I have to express regrets this year. My Mother has come down with Alzheimer disease and there is a myriad of consequences associated with that as you can imagine. And all are very time-consuming. But do have a great time!

I do appreciate your candidness and I am very pragmatic about these things. Putting the blood, sweat and tears emotional feelings aside that come with owning/fixing a car for 16 years, my unscientific market survey comes to a price of about $12,000US or about $18,000CDN. The reason I asked about Carlisle is that I sensed a Vette feeding frenzy when I was there last August. I was really taken aback by some of the prices and the money flowing. So my thought was when I sell, I will make the trek to Carlisle and see what happens. I will not be there this year.

Dalannex and VetteBoy. I HAVE TO HAVE a Corvette! There are no ifs-ands-or-buts. Kidding aside, my choice would be a low-mileage 1992 or 1993 triple-white convertible (body/top/interior). A fellow in our Club has one and it is gorgeous. But he will not sell. There are others out there but they seem fairly rare.

Paul, the car is spotless. My friend out in California sold her 79 for 17K, and it was identical to yours and mine. My L-48 has 37K miles on it and I'm not sure I could ever sell it. I have so much B,S&T in it. However in the years to come I'm sure it will be worth significantly more. I hope!

I do wonder why people beat on the 1979s. And I do not say that from self-interest. My life savings are not tied up in a car. The tack taken seems to be the proverbial high-volume production number. I find that a specious argument as we are dealing with very old cars. Many of the 53,807 went to bone-yards many years ago. How many remain? And in what condition? And then there is the performance matter, associated with smog equipment. Granted 15.6 at 91mph is not great but how many owners even try it? I did - once; 15.9 at 86. Fun, but not something I would do regularly. The 1979 featured the RPO D80 front and rear spoiler option carried over from the Pace Car of 1978. I prefer the 1980 integrated look but the fact remains that the 1979 was the only year to have this option. That comment is for those who cherish rarity. As well, near to the end of the C3 run the cars were tame but dependable and body fit had been sorted out pretty well. The seats are comfortable, etc. I think Boomers - particularly Boomers who have always wanted a Corvette but never for some reason.... - would find mine an attractive vehicle. But the market will dictate the price. We shall see.

Paul, by reading your posts it seems you know alot about these '79s. Unfortunately, I do not. I'm curious how rare the cloth interior is compared to the leather interior. I have not seen many 79's with a cloth interior like mine. My vette has a dark blue exterior with dark blue cloth interior. I have yet to see another one like it. The ones I find are always leather.

One reason you may not be seeing alot of cloth interiors is because they are not being reproduced. You can only get leather or vinyl in any of the catalogues. But you are right the leather option was extremely popular in 1979.

I actually like my cloth interior. It's in great shape and comfortable as well. I would think that leather would be bad on a hot day? Wouldn't it also rip easier? =)

Re: My 1979 Sale for at Carlisle. Just Fishing. What $? (paul79)
I've always admired your car and from the pics and your discription it seems to be in mint condition. You might be surprized on how much you might get for it. Not everyone out there looking to buy a car are concerned with how many were built, what it's 1/4 eta is etc etc (they're not corvette nuts like us). They're looking for a car with style and in good condition. Additionally with all the hype on the 50th year corvette anything corvette sells and comands a higher price this year and possibly next. So if you have to sell nows the time to do it. Good luck, you should get your price...start higher of course and come down if necessary. Hope you get another one soon.

They are leather or vinyl because the cloth fabric has never been reproduced. Not available. It did wear very quickly when new - those fabric dots became larger with time - and people went the vinyl/leather route. I did. Gave up after many searches to find the fabric.

No, good quality leather does not rip. But the back of your legs sure do sweat.

Jerry,
I truly appreciate your reply and comments! It is a difficult decision to part with an old friend of steel and fiberglass that I have owned for 16 years. Those many days and nights of bleeding from the knuckles, the Wife saying stay away, the special tools that I do not have, but the Bubba tools that I do, the three-inch stack of bills for times that I could not do it myself, the good times on the road when she ran well, the joy of taking her out of winter storage each April after winter storage since October and hearing those 8 cylinders come alive (What a Feeling!), doing the local charity events for dis-advantaged kiddies, seeing young eyes come alive with the joy of the sight and sound of a Corvette, Ricers admiring an old but still modern car in many ways, and the pleasure of being with people in the local Corvette Club. Fun times.
