Default Brakes making odd mechanical screech at low speed

When I drive my `76 around at low speed, like moving it in or out of my shop or whatever, and I hit the brake pedal I hear a sound like a rusty old garden gate. It only happens when I'm pushing the pedal and is especially noticeable when I put the car in gear or I'm switching between drive and reverse (or vice versa) and I'm holding the car from moving. I'm 60 now and have had quite a few vehicles over the years, performance and otherwise, and I've never heard this particular noise before. It mostly comes from the front ..as near as I can tell. Other than that the brakes work fine and there are no other noises from them at all. The car stops straight and smooth. I don't know when the brakes were last serviced but they work very well. Any idea what's causing it?

Default

have you checked the front wheel bearings? have you removed the wheels and checked the condition of the pads?
