Default What does the Power Window Relay look like?

78 Pace car

I thought I would just follow the wires from the switches to the relay, but oh no that would be too easy.

I have a silver box mounted right under the cigarette lighter; it has a large Pink wire plugged into the top, then Orange with a black stripe under that, then a smaller pink wire with a black stripe under that. Is this the Power Window Relay? Someone said that it should be back by the radio, but I don't see anything back there.

I called around to the parts stores in town, they say they don’t even have a listing for it. Chevrolet parts is not open (Of course).
Wonder if this is a part I’ll have to get from Ecklers or some were like that?

Looking at a wiring diagram it describes the relay as having:
A 20 gauge pink/blackwire, a 12 gauge orange/black(theses 2 wires in a single connector) and a 12 gauge pink connected to it. So it sounds like thats it. Hope that helps

Thanks Scott,
From that diagram can you tell me what wires I could jumper together to by-pass this relay long enough to see if that’s what’s bad?

Yep the 12 G pink is the wire going to the center post of both window switches, so it's the power to the motors thru the switches. The Orange/Black is from the batt so is a constant hot and the Pink/Black is hot when Ign is on as a signal to relay to function when Ign is on.

If I'm reading this diagram right, the relay's only funtion is to act as a switch from a batt source that is"closed" when Ign is on. So full motor load is thru switches and not farmed out thru relay. Hope tht helps

Is this it?
Sorry for the stupid questions, but I’m a toolmaker not an electronics guy.
However, I do have a Fluke Multimeter if there’s a way to check this relay. :)

Thanks,
Dave

Here is a link to a on-line 78 electrical manual that another forum member posted a while back. Can find everything you need to know..

This might help a little

if you apply 12v to the terminal the pink/black wire is connected to with the case grounded. You should have no resistance thru the 2 other terminals.
Applying power to that terminal closes the contact points.

Scott,
Sorry I was posting at the same time.

So if I hook the 12G Pink to the Orange/Black I have power to the switches whether the ignition is on or not and have by passed the relay. Should be able to hit the buttons and roll the windows down.

Scott,
That worked. Both windows rolled down, although they were slow and the jumper wire got hot.
But that tells me the relay is bad. Now if I didn’t burn anything  up all I have to do is find a relay.

Thanks a lot for the help.
