Default ZZ383 install surprise in my 78

Today I decided to see if the stock hood would fit with my new ZZ383 install.

Well it fits with 1/2" clearence. I was expecting to replace the hood. All info stated ( will not fit under stock corvette hood )

GM ZZ383 with Eldebrock 7516 air gap, and used a 1.5" drop base GM 3" air cleaner.

The GM Serpentince belt system installed with a few mod's just waiting for the dual fans.

Almost any manifold and carb will fit under the stock hood - with a drop base air cleaner. I'm surprised the manifold makers don't say that in their specs.

Your using a drop base air cleaner.... Most threads state it may fit with a drop base air cleaner. also the different year c3 hoods had different amounts of clearance... you appear to have a lower setup than I do with my drop base 3" cleaner and I dont have the air gap intake...
what kind of carb is under that air cleaner.. I have an edelbrock and only a mild drop base will fit.

Its a Holley 770 Avenger ( GM Recommended size ). I picked the deepest drop base air cleaner the store had, and found which fit best. The only mods I needed was for the throttle plate.
http://cvrproducts.com/throttle-linkage-brackets/
When WOT the linkage would touch, grinded out about 1/8" to allow WOT.

Based on the dimensions of my L48 stock with a full 1" clearence and the difference from the stock intake vs the air gap it should not fit or be so close it would rub. The stock manifold deck measures at 3.81" the air gap @ 4.7" so I should have .1" clearence and thats before looking at the air cleaner. The stock air cleaner is already a drop base.
I measured the top of the air cleaner to the drain rails of the fenders. Stock measure @ 56mm (2.2") and ZZ383 measured at 76mm(3") with a 1" clearence at stock it should be very close. My original measurements of clearence seem to be off. I'm just happy with one less item to fix.

Looks good, mine is finally in thanks to great help from fellow forum member Mooser. It fought us every millimetre of the way going in. What starter are you using, as I'd like to go with a mini high tq one as under the dumb heading.
I thought that my old sb had a 153 tooth fw, so just bolted my existing starter up fighting to get around those headers. Turned the key and it just spun. Pulled the old fw out (168, 14") and the auto flex plate (153 12.75") that came with the ZZ383 crate and shook my head at my dumb mistake.

My car has a th350 ( transmission is a winter project ) 168 tooth flex plate. My ZZ383 came with a flywheel. Bought a new 168 tooth external balanced 1 piece seal flex plate and used the original starter. I have sanderson C134DP shorties to avoid clearence problems. Only problem I had was at the steering box. Needed to grind a bit off the housing and a slight dent to 1 tube. You fix one problem to make another problem.

I had to grind a bit off the inside of the valve covers as # 2 and 7 rockers hit. Took the vette for the 30 mi. break in run and oil change. Very happy with how smooth and strong it pulls. Lots of small parts start arriving tmw from C Central to replace some of the 42 yr old worn out ones.
Anything new on your vette?

Great looking Vette! But where did you get that upper radiator hose?

Its from a 1995 Ford Bronco. You need to cut off a piece at the rad. The stock hose has one more elbow and the diameter is to large, but once you cut off the elbow it fits very well. Its not perfect but it is a stock part.

This is great to know. I am thinking of doing the same with my 383 using an air gap and Holley a double pumper carb. Does anyone know if the clearance is same , more, or less in a 68 SB hood as opposed to yours?

There is a couple inches less clearance with a 68 sb hood compared to the later hoods.

If I had of known early last week i could of test fitted all 3 hoods that i have, (72 sb base, Lt-1 in storage and L88). I have the L88 hood on and used a drop base for clearance. I went with the Deluxe version which is 450 hp/tq @ 4500 rpm. My previous 383 I had used a Torker intake which is a low rise intake and with a drop base both the sb base hood and Lt-1 fit. I didn't need a drop base to use the L88 hood? The intake that came with the new engine is a few inches higher than the Torker and as previously stated I needed a drop base to fit my L88 hood as the air cleaner lid would hit.
The heads are drilled for both vortec and sbc intakes. Do you have the Air Gap on your current engine, how's the fit?

No I have the stock intake manifold but want to go to the air gap and a new carb. Possibly AFR heads but that doesn't affect the height. I don't want to spend the money on the air gap if it doesn't fit and do not want to change the hood. Just trying to figure it out.

I have an air gap intake and located air filters that will fit under the stock hood on my 78.
