Hello all!

I'm new to this forum, but I have a question I thought I'd throw your way-

On my 1971 convertible, the lock cylinder has recently come loose. It still works, but it is not snug in the door as it should be. It has a tendency to come completely out of the door when I am removing the key. (I've attached some photos).

After some research, I think it may be the Lock Cylinder Retainer Clip that has come loose- but I can't be sure.

I haven't tinkered with the door much, so I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what part has come loose and how to re attach it. I assume it is floating somewhere inside the door, but I think I better replace it.

Does anyone have any advice before I remove the door panel and get to work?

I can see the rod that the latch catches on, and with some precision I can re attach it by inserting the cylinder back into the door





the cylinder comes completely out





The pawl appears to still be connected





I need to know what missing part keeps the pawl from coming off the rod inside the door. The rod fits into this slot here.

look for a square "C"shaped clip, laying in the bottom of your door,
the clip locks it in place using the groves next to the outer polished part.

If the clip is on the lock there is now way for it to come out.


In this picture you'll see how it installs. Your clip won't have the switch on it (Pic B, item 2) It will just be the clip.

So, I put this off for a while... but when I fixed it, I made a quick tutorial video in case anyone else has the same problem. Hope this helps!

How did you attach the clip? I am having problems getting the clip on. Tried long needle nose with not success yet.

I seated it with my hand. Then I reached in with one of my heavier crescent wrenches and banged it into place, using the lip on the clip as a contact point. I have thin hands, so the needle nose might come in handy for getting it to seat initially. But it takes some force to get it to fit all the way onto the cylinder.
