Engine Swap for a 1976 L48, Transmission Question
Good morning,
So I just dusted off my dad's 1976 Stingray, took it to a shop the forum recommended (thanks for that), and now it is running.
However, I am seriously considering putting its 140,000 mile original L48 engine on a stand in the corner of my garage, and swapping in a new engine. I just feel like based on the problems we are having with the car that it isn't worth rebuilding the engine.
The car has the original 4 speed transmission in it. I was looking at the following engines:
1) Standard GM 350 Crate Engine:
http://www.chevrolet.com/performance...50-290-hp.html
Available from various sources for around $2000-$2200
2) GM 350 HO Turn-Key:
http://www.chevrolet.com/performance...ck-350-ho.html
Available from various sources for around $5000
3) A third party 383 stroker such as this one:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Blueprint-Engi...4CTC1/10002/-1
Nice warranty.
Which of those engines do you think the original transmission and rear end ratio that came with the L48 could handle?
And do you have any suggestions on a replacement transmission?
Thanks.

Your existing transmission and rear end can handle far more power than any of those crate engines. Be aware that the power they quote is gross HP and not net HP as was the original engine. Only the third choice you linked to makes significantly more power than your existing L48.
