I am no expert when it comes to motors. Can someone explain why their is a counter clockwise or clockwise. I have seen at least three different wording orders on the distributor cap. How do I know mine is correct considering when I but my 74 sbc they told me it is a crate motor with electronic ignition. The reason I am asking is when I let of the gas at around 55 it back fires a little. I have a new distributor, new cap, new wires and new plugs and I took it to the shop to check the timing and they said they needed to advance it. Thanks a lot.

Depends on the engine design. It wouldnt run at all if you had it wired for CCW and it was a CW engine.

rear of the engine the rotor turns clockwise front of the engine it turns counter clockwise.

Their is no rotor with electronic ignition.

There are electronic modules that insert in distributor with rotor and there are modern rotor-less ignition systems. With the latter, there is some sort of device that signals the ECM with crank position information.

HEI systems and points systems that are converted to EI still have rotors.

Also:

Chevy distributors turn CW; Pontiac distributors turn CCW; some distributor caps have the plug leads reorganized internally so that 2-4-6-8 extend out the right side of the cap and 1-3-5-7 extend out the left side. There are lots of ways to 'run a wire'.

That depends on the type of electronic ignition you're using. A rotorless system will require a computer to do the firing for you.

That can be due to a variety of things not related to firing order.

Off -throttle backfiring indicates a lean condition or a need of timing advance.
