79 C3 200r4 Swap
Hi,
I'm doing a 200r4 swap on my 79 L48. I have a 200r4 CRF out of a 88' monte carlo that I am having rebuild. The motor is pretty much stock minus the emissions. I am looking at using the Bowler lockup module over using a vacuum or brake system. My question is.. what stall should I get for my torque converter and am I able to move the existing cross member back to the TH400 location and if there is a th400 cross member location on a 79 c3 at all.
The function of the vette is a cruiser, so I am not looking to make it in to a muscle car or strip car.

Not sure about the cross member location for a 79 but as far as the torque converter goes you should stick with one close to stock stall speed, remember that with a 200R4 you have a lower first gear so you can get off the line easier so don't need a high stall speed especially with a stock engine.
Personally I prefer the vac switch option incorporated in the lock up circuit, this eliminates the issue Bowler mention where the trans is locked undesirably in some instances climbing hills, they have band aided it by using the brake light switch to unlock the trans manually. FWIW I have the auto lock up when in 4th gear provided that the manifold vac is below a preset level, I have a time delay valve on this circuit to give a few seconds delay between shifting to 4th and lockup. Topped it off with a manual override switch and brake light switch.
I suggest you read up on 200R4 TV valve operation at the Bow Tie overdrive site. My rebuilt trans came with a purple TV spring fitted and with this ran at 160psi line pressure. Fitted with Bow Ties longer spring line pressure is now 210 psi. Their TV cable kit is good too but e mail communication wasn't.

Do you plan on sticking with the stock cam forever, or will you be going up? The stock cam will work well with a mild converter, but if you decide to go up, I'd highly recommend getting a 2400 stall or so.

Your stock crossmember doesn't move. It utilizes the same mounting configuration. The body size of 2004R is same as 350 turbo. Thats why this is such a straight forward swap. Get your 4 speed shifter parts from shiftworks.

pretty straight forward swap, just remove the extension off of your transmission crossmember. that lockup control should work pretty nice. i used a bm controller. I am using a 2200 converter from trans depot. whatever converter you get make sure its a lockup model.... my swap info......

I am looking at doing this as well now. Will the tranny handle 340 hp and 390 tq? or will it have to be beefed up? I am leaving the 3.08 gears in it.

depends on what trans you get, the gran national ones were the best, 86 87 88 monte carlo SS trans were good also. if you go used. there are some standard mods you can do to help them survive a little longer. I did them to mine. i have a 85 monte carlo SS 200-4r. im pushing it with about 370 hp. 3:55 gears. but i only have about 700 miles on it so far its held up well. good luck........

Ok thank you. I looked up a complete tranny kit from TCI is $2800 canadian. Thats a tranny that will handle 500 plus hp a converter kickdown oil and cooler.

I bought my original 2004R from Monster. It never was correct, didn't shift right and I wouldn't recommend doing business with them. I had a local shop rebuild to correct the mistakes and add the shift kit that it should have came with. The tech told be it would handle 500 HP easily and was a very good transmission. I am in the process of beating the crap out of it every time I drive it. Only have a few thousand miles on it but the shifts are very solid. I have it mated up to a LS engine.

You may have to shorten your driveshaft with a 700_4r. theyre a little longer than a200

I have my vette at the shop doing the 200r4 swap. They rebuilt the core I provided with all new parts including hardened stator and upgraded the servo and added a shift kit.
I had bought the BowtieOverdrive cross member, but it was not needed. The factory xmember was a perfect fit. I may change it out when I do dual exhaust.
Again, the 200r4 I am putting in is CRF code, but it should be fine as I am not planning on having more than 300hp put to it. Plus the upgrades to it should liven up the shifts.

Well i gave up, said hell with it and got a set of 3.55 gears for the diffy, going to go that route instead. All i wanted to do was pick up the bottom end and midrange.
