Gas Cap Hinge Assembly

Default Gas Cap Hinge Assembly
Took my gas cap lid apart to get the lid painted and the spring fell out. How or what keeps the spring at the hinge in place. Looked in the AIM and it shows the spring and pin. Does the pin have to be pulled to get the spring to stay in place?

No. Mine did fall out, but stayed in without pulling the pin.
