Default Halfshaft U-Joints?

Hi Guys,

I have my differential pulled while I'm doing some work under the car. I want to replace the u-joints while i'm under there.

Are these the ones I should buy? I'm not sure which are correct. It says all 71-79 driveshafts, but only 80-81 halfshafts.

I have a 1978. Are these the u-joints I need for the halfshafts?

https://www.vansteel.com/index.cfm?f...p=3026&ID=3193

Thanks.

I'm not for sure were your located but you can go to the parts house and buy spicer solid u-jonts that way if they"re not right you can take them back.

Check Ecklers or Zip, they may have what you need.

Call them up. They were great to work with when I bought the reconditioned half shafts.

I did not use those for the halfshafts. My 71 halfshafts used a 5-799X ujoint. The 5-790X ujoint would we the driveshaft for a 71-79 regardless of transmission. The 70 and earlier C3 would use the 5-790X (1330 series) joint with a turbo 400 and a 5-785X (1310 series) joint for the manual transmissions.

Yeah, here is the correct halfshaft u-joint for a '78.

The 5-799x, 1350 series u-joint.

http://www.vansteel.com/index.cfm?fu...p=3026&ID=1966

But I think the 5-799x is old and was replaced with the 5-1350x, can anyone confirm?

You are correct. I edited the number in my post. I typed mine at work and was able to check my boxes at the house this weekend.

For cross reference, here's what I have.

These came with the car when I bought it as a project. One big problem though: I don't know which joints go where.

For your 1/2 shafts the correct u-joint is the 5-1350X Spicer.

Ok so which one is correct? Everyone gave a different answer and all of them are not showing correct when I do a compatibility check. When I search my 78, these are the ones that show they fit:

Spicer 5-213X U-Joint Kit

I am looking for a non zerk one. Any ideas?

Well, I bought the 5-1350x's. I don't know if they fit yet as I destroyed a halfshaft removing the old u-joints.

By the way, Duntov Motors looked to be the only vendor that offered halfshafts w/o u-joints, but it seems like they've taken my money and run. They charged my credit card and I've received 0 communication.

Does any other vendor sell halfshafts without the u-joints?

I've dealt with Duntov and gotten the same response - nothing. I persisted and FINALLY got them to respond and got what I needed, after almost a million phone calls/messages. Never again.

Ok…a little more research and it looks like the 1350x's are correct for half shafts and the smaller 5-213X and 5-1330X are for the drive shaft. The compatibility check was only figuring the drive shaft and not the half shafts.

My 1980 4 speed uses 1350 in half shaft 5-1330x and 5-1310x for the drive shaft
A 5-213x is a greasable 1330 size ujoint
