Default Speedometer Cable Replacement

I want to replace my speedometer cable in my 1980. The needle in my speedometer jumps up and down. I have been reading past posts about taking out the cable and casing as a unit. Can't you just replace the cable alone and leave the casing? Wouldn't' it be easier?

yea you can definitely replace just the cable. i recommend connecting transmission end to a drill and running it slow to see if needle move smoothly , as gauge may be issue as well
