I did not check timing...just took the video so timing is at about 10 BTDC
So once you get the car to start you haven't adjusted the timing using the timing light? That would be the first thing you need to do before you worry about anything else...

When you made the video was the computer connected? Sounds like the timing is not advancing; if you put the timing light on #1 and then rev it up, does the advance increase?

Ok good news update....I checked the timing and it was way off!
I set it at 12 BTDC...the previous issu I posted in the video is now gone....
However I have this "knock" that starts at 25 mph and then happens throughout the acceleration....kinda worried

Tell me what you think * and if you can hear it *

It sounds to me like it is missing badly. So it only does that under load?

Interesting that the timing was so far out.

Correct only under load - idels great in eeh driveway and I can hold the throttle open and zero noise/knock...

take it out on the road and you hear what I get...I do not have the sheild for the dizzy and I do have the original metal air cleaner on the carb...prob only a 1/4 of an inch between it and the dizzy.....think its adding the "miss" or do I need to look at other things that could cause the miss?

Do I need to start pulling a plug wire off one at a time and drive it? ** What would that indicate if I isolate to a cylinder?

My co-worker took a listen to the video...he's fearful it's rod knock
I kinda am too....crate motor may be calling...would it be silly to still run my CCC with a crate motor ? Say a ZZ4 crate motor ?!?

It's hard to tell, is the speed of the knocking RPM dependent?

Well....I revved the hell out if it in the driveway tonight and held it...no knock
Take for a spin and it starts at 15-20 mph...increases in frequency and intensity as rpms increase....trans shifts and rpms lower it tapers down...some

Zz4 has been discontinued
I gues ill look at the 383 crate options as well as the gm perf 350ho ....
My new ECM arrives tomorrow, I'm not hopefull that my knock will go away...but...maybe it will. I did notice that the check engine light was flickering very faintly at time while idling

some places still have the zz4 in stock.

the 350HO is a good motor, and since it uses a factory roller block, it's easy to upgrade the cam to a roller later on, even though it came with a flat tappet came to keep costs down.

Qwank,
I read the car craft article you posted on the other gentlemen's thread for L81 more horsepower (was very helpful for me!)...I droped a hint to the wife last night that a new motor will be 4 K....she didnt complain at all (Crazy right !)...but she did say you will prep the car for that kind of power first with better brakes and suspension...I have taught her well LOL

The new CCC/ECM is on the UPS truck now so tonight when I get home..will swap it in and see what happens (Fingers crossed)

Im going to take it up to the shop I work with off and on and have them take a listen and see if I am really doomed with the L81 or if its a minor fix.

Sure does not sound like a rod knock to me....more like a miss. Have you tried putting the timing light around each plug wire and watching the flashes to see if one cylinder is different? Are all the plugs tight? Tried a light spray of water on the plug wires with no lights around to check for arcing?

Lanny great suggestions - none of which I have tried. I have only ever connected a timing light to #1, no idea that was an option.

I will double check all plugs and plug wires for proper "click" when pushed on all the way tonight as well. *Water trick sounds like a great idea as well....what if I do see an arch? Also what should I expect to see when putting the timing light on each plug?

** also i have been torn on the "rod knock" as i can rev the you know what out of it in park and nada - if it were a rod - it would do it at idle right??

Amorget....you were right !!!
Popped the hood when I got home from work and the #8 plug wire was barley hanging on...and the morons at the exhaust shop are to blame...I looked in the boot and they bent it sideways thus it wasn't on....my 80 dollar MSD wires ...ughhhh and the plug itself is black and burnt up on the outside ..... Putting my son to bed then I'm going to get out there and fix it, check the plug etc an take for a test drive *** and I'll be checking all plugs now***

I thought the CCC carbed engines could only take a few degrees of initial advance, with the computer taking over from there. I could be wrong, but I am just beginning to researching the subject for my '87 Elky.

Good luck. Ralph
