Default My 1980 Hood & Body Work

Hi guys

Thought Id share what Ive done with the original 80 hood project

Been gathering parts for my 1980 now that I have my engine bay all neat and tidy. My painter buddy Dave is working on my car body work about 4 hours a day or two.

I want the L88 hood and more air to let it breath. I decided to do a one off using my own hood, since I knew I could do it cheaper than an after market hood and nothing fits like the original.

I ended up buying the L88 scoop from Summit after I went and took a look at in in person, then Dave and I started the work on the hood. What I like is the front nose still has the original 80 center section, then blends into the L88 cowl.

We added a couple center supports to stiffen it up a bit also. Final work will be done on it as Dave gets closer on the car

Here are some photos

Cheers Dale

Thanks tak82

It should look real nice when its all completely done, but we finally have the shape nailed I was looking for.

Painter Dave works for me at $20 and hour as a side job, so at 17 hours labor in the hood, and the L88 scoop $110 I did pretty good. The rest will be normal prep along with the body work.

Started DA sanding down the whole car and we are getting rid of the rear tail and front nose seems next.

Replaced the body mounts yesterday, what a joy that was. I lucked out though and many of them we fine so I did not have to do the whole enchilada. I had to get this done so we can clean up the body lines and jams. I don't think it moved a bit though honestly.

Cheers DW

Hi Waljr

Hope to spray the car in about 4 to 6 weeks, and Im going with Med Spiral Grey Metallic, black on center of hood cowl, Coy Gunmetal 17 & 18 " wheels.

I have all the trim parts, back window and t tops already powder coated black. Tons to do all in baby steps. Im super busy making motorbike parts so have to inch along on my toys

Glad you like it

Like yours. Here's another cool hood option from the enterweb. looks like the same car, but with two different hood setups.

I have thought about a scoop on my 80' hood and was wondering how it would look with the front of it coming up. I like what you did. Look forward to seeing it painted. Sounds like you have nice color choices picked out too.

Can you let me know how much your hood weighs with the scoop finished?

Hi Mike

Its not heavy and nothing fits like a stock hood that came on the car. What I like it is a true one off

For now anyway ..... lol

If I can remember I will balance it on my digital scale for yah

I have a few pistons like yours laying around Wal

Looks like a Nitrous lean out to me ?

I has NOS years ago drill a set of jets .005 under and melted down my pro mod motor at Firebird raceway at a national drag bike event. Went a 172 on 3 cylinders but it was ugly.

I checked every jet from then on ....

Checking rear Coy wheel clearance 18 x 9.5 x 5.5 BS on Sunday

Car has a new TRW composite spring on it and still contacts with a 1/4" spacer, clears 3/16 with 1/2 spacer, but wont go there.

I ordered a special 1/2 shorter 360 rate VBP spring this morning. So it should be about 3/4 narrower than what I have on the car now.

I plan on running billet 1/4 spacers with ET lugs to get more than enough thread engagement. With the 1/4 spacers I have 3/4 of studs left

My front are 17x 8 with 4.5 BS so plan to do the same with them

Glad I found the CF and read the wheel thread about 5 times

Thanks Dale

did you go with a truflex nose/tail or straight f/glass.
i'm trying to build my knowledge base up before I attack the seams on mine as well.

I lost a lot of interest when it got keyed

Then a cattle dog ran all over it attacking it's own reflection....
