speedometer cable noise
The speedometer hasn't worked right since I got it last fall. It's getting really noisy, the noise is coming from the front. I leaned forward and noise is coming from the instrument cluster. The speedo is bouncing and reads 70 at an actual 50. Do I replace or lube the cable. What have you guys done to quiet the noise and how?

What year is your car ? I have the same issue on my 82. Tried to lube the cable with no different result so I'll probably replace the cables. With cruise there are 2. It could be your speedometer also.Mine is steady to 50 then takes off. I've read it could be the magnet in the speedometer going bad. Is yours bouncing at all speeds ?

Mine was the cruise control modulator causing the bouncing. Replaced it after chasing cables with no results and now speedo works well.
Mine was making noise as well, but now that the needle is steady no more noise. So I think the noise was it constantly accelerating then de-accelerating the little gears in the speedo.

My 81 is doing the same thing. Solid through 35 then launches all over the place. Replaced the lower cable to the cruise control module, that got the needle moving but it started screeching and bouncing everywhere. I disconnected the upper cable and will replace that first to see if it cuts it. Let me know if you resolve your issue, mine may be the same problem

I'm leaning toward having the cable replaced while it's in for the tune up and up in the air. I try to do as much as I can but I don't have time and I don't want the noise all summer
