What would you recommend for tires on a 1982 with stock wheels?

probably the radial T/A. cooper cobras are o.k, thats what i have and someone had armstrong tires that looked pretty good. even though i have them the cobras suck if the road gets wet. i don't drive in the rain but here in florida it can rain and you won't see a cloud in the sky. i think firestone still makes the fire hawk.

My car came from the PO with the Cooper Cobras on it. When I do change them I'll go with the radial T/As.

i fail to understand why tire manufacturers couldn't just update their tires to make a safer product instead of this garbage they stick us with. a stiffer sidewall, better tread design and a better compound would fix it. and people will say we are a small segment yada yada yada. the fact is there are more than a few cars with 15" tires on them .

Firestone does not make a Firehawk for out 15" wheels anymore. Just BFG and Cooper. Pep Boys sell the Cooper with their brand on it for a little less.

Bottom line, I guess they just don't see enough of a market there. On a positive note, when I was shopping for 15" tires about 2 years ago the T/As were about to get an updated design. The timeline kept getting put back and I went with Mickey Thompsons instead.

Actually, Mickey Thompson makes a decent 15" tire for our cars and it has a higher speed rating than the TAs.

I have had Goodyear GT's (OEM), Dunlop GT Qualifers, BF Goodrich Radial T/A's-all 255/60/15's for most of the 32 years that I have owned my 78 and I finally just gave up on the crap tires available though I held out forever. I finally went with SLP 17's made for the C3 that look like the C4 ZR-1 rims with 255/45/17 ZR tires a few years ago and have never looked back. The difference an ultra high performance tire makes in the ride, handling and steering response is simply unbelievable compared to the junk 255/60/15's they sell today for our cars. If you can bring yourself to consider a different rim versus the OEM rim, 17/18 tires are really the only way to go!

FlyLS6 went with Maxxis. At least they are an H rated tire.

Can you post a picture? This sounds like an interesting option.

17s or 18s is definitely the way to go.

my wheels cost $600, but my tires actually cost less than a set of BFGs. the initial wheel investment is worth it, who knows how much 15'' tires will cost compared to 17s are they get made less and less.
