A/C trouble on a 95 deg.day.
I had noticed a sound that was like marbles bouncing around coming out of the compressor latley. Than today I noticed the a/c clutch stopping spinning and the car blows warm. Can the clutch be replaced or do I need a new compressor again?
Damn it never ends. :smash: :smash:

I hope the answer is new compressor for that's what I did last year to the tune of $175.00 (chromed) P.S. doens't work since engine rebuilt, I paid $50.00 to have it charged then engine blew and engine builder did not have EPA cert and just have not got around to it. Actually not true the car is a weekend warrior only and the T-tops are never on.

Can't one get a rebuilt one for cheap? My A/C is broke, I don't know if it is the compressor (looks nasty so probably) or just needs to be charged. Good time for an R134a conversion I think. It may not blow as cold as R12, but it blows colder than no A/C.

No problem with the R134 conversions. My '76 caddy was converted two years ago and it's like a refrigerator in there. I think they won't blow as cold if you put in too much R134.

I paid $240 for a new delco comp as I'd heard the chromed ones are usually rebuilds, don't know that it's true but I'd rather have one that works than a pretty one. I painted it body color and now have the best of both worlds.

If you just need a clutch, Auto-zone has the removal/installation tols for rent. If you can turn the compressor by turning the front portion of the clutch the the compressor is not locked up. Clutch hubs do go bad. but you will have trouble finding just that part. Ice Cold Auto Air may have one you can buy but it depends on the person at the counter and the mood they are in... BTW R134a works as good as R12 if it is serviced correctly.(Not too much) My stock 69 works fine. AVOID rebuilt compressors They are Real pieces of $%*&.

Yea I see your point. I had the reman. comp. that I bought from Ecklers during thier Oct. vette show. I returned the first one & ended up with this one. I did the 134A conversion and was getting about 58 degrees out of the vents when it did work. I hope that I don't need to change the accumulator again.. I'm debating about caliing corvette clinic in Sanford and looking into the sanden swap???

58 vents temps sounds too high?

Mine is 43 deg. when running 2000rpm .. outside air is 90deg. No sun load. That is the all stock 69 system with R134a and a new drier with R134a compatable dessicant.

Word of warning, if the compressor went out there's a good chance you'll need to flush the entire system. When the compressor goes it "throws" metal flakes into the system. You replace the compressor and these flakes come back around the system and blow up the new one. Flushing has to be done with freon, so it's expensive, but absolutely necessary. And a new dryer is needed too.
Like you said, it never ends.

the systems around here are not washed with freon, but a super nasty quart bottle of what can best be described as carb cleaner on steroids...and I mean a boatload of steroids....this sh it is NASTY, the fumes will lay you out, cold, so watch it....blow it out with air jet/compressor....
frankly, I just use carb cleaner and forgetaboutit....been fine so far....
