I ran a RPM intake, same ht. as the air-gap RPM, for years under a LT-1 hood. You must run a drop base air cleaner assy., use a shorter filter and change the stud to a flat head bolt.
I use a lightly wadded ball of aluminum foil placed on the air cleaner top to check clearances. It is not as messy as clay.
Here is a pic. of that set-up.

Just be careful-
You can't shorten the filter height too much without running into other issues. You need to have 3/4" (min) distance between the top of the carb vent tubes and the bottom of the air cleaner lid in order for the carb to function properly- I'm not sure you can achieve that if the filter element is much shorter than 3" tall using the LT-1 style drop base air cleaner?
I went to a Professional Products 'Crosswinds' intake (Air Gap knock-off) with a Holley 750 DP and it wouldn't fit the LT-1 hood using a 3" filter and the LT-1 drop base air cleaner. I ended up grafting a 73' style 'Cowl Induction' hood to my 69' to get everything to fit and I am now using a 3.75" tall filter in the LT-1 style air cleaner and I have about 1/4-3/8" of clearance using a 1/4" carb spacer.
Everything is a compromise on these cars to get it to fit-
Just measure carefully before you pull the trigger.

I agree with c69vete I have an 82 with the same Air Gap intake with a Holley 750. It's tight but it fits. I borrowed some of my kids playdoh to check the distance between the hood and top of the nut. A drop base air cleaner is key. Here is my setup.

If clearance is tight, you also need to consider engine torque twist.
I snapped a couple of standard engine mounts quite easily with my 383.
Now have a solid mount on the left side only, and no issues.

Filter tops don't work well if you have less than a 1/2" or so clearance between the lid and the hood- Otherwise they are a good option.

I'm worried about the same thing. I am building a 383 with the same intake with an Edelbrock carb in my 73. Had to use the taller intake to better align with the runners in the heads. I'm crossing my fingers the extra height in the cowl hood and a drop base filter will clear.

I ended up changing hoods so that I could fit a bigger filter. Another trick is to use an allen bolt instead of the stud and wing nut. I've heard of holes from the filter stud.

the guys from car craft did a good dyno comparison of edelbrock sbc intakes on Utube.they tested the air gap and the performer .after they machined the performer a little ,it was close power wise to a air gap .
