Sport mirror loose
The driver side sport mirror on my '79 is loose. Not where is mounts to the body, but the mirror head is loose from the pedestal. Anyone know how these are held together and what I have to do to tighten it?

There are two screws in the base of the mirror that hold the mirror in place. The pain of the job, is that to tighten the screws the mirror
must be removed from the car. It can be done with the door glass
in place. There are some previous posts on how to remove the
mirror.

I would not waste my time trying to do it with the glass in place. The front vertical window track covers the easy access to the nuts that hold the mirror on. I would like to see the post that says that it can be done with the door glass UNTOUCHED. I would honestly write that I would have learned something new. But I have tried...and window up or down...the nuts are covered and not easily accessed.

I have never removed the door glass, and am thinking I might turn a
small problem into a big problem if I tried to remove the glass so
this is the way I have removed the sport mirrors on both a 1979
and 1980:
1. Loosen both the front and rear track stops and move them all
the way down. Its been a while, but I believe I removed them
completely so the window could move down even further.
2. Lower the window until it stops.
3. Remove the felt anti rattle bumpers.
4. Use some wood wedges (paint stir sticks stacked together will
work) to push the top of the window inward as far as possible and
hold it in this position.
5. Take a 7/16" 1/4 drive socket and grind it down a bit to make
it slimmer. Use a 1/4" ratchet to remove the two nuts that hold
the mirror pedestal. To loosen the rear nut, I had to use a 1/4 style
breaker bar as it has a thinner profile than a 1/4 inch ratchet.
I also used a 7/16 inch offset box end wrench in removing the bolts.
Is really not that difficult of a job.
