L48 to L82 Intake Manifold, Good Idea?
I was curious if the L82's aluminum intake manifold was a direct replacement for the L48's cast manifold. And is there a performance benefit (other than weight) for having the L82's manifold on there?

The heads on the L-48 are the limiting factor. There may be a little better flow with the L-82 manifold on an L-48 engine, but I don't think power output will see a noticible change.
If you plan to install better heads some time in the future, the L-82 intake would be a better piece to have; but if you buy GOOD heads, then the L-82 intake would be the 'limiting factor' [better than L-48, but still not a great match with modern head technology].

the L-82 manifold isn't that great. the best factory intake is the LT-1 intake good luck finding one at a good price. try edelbrock weiand or holley all make good dual plane manifolds.

If you are looking for an aluminum intake that WILL fit your 1979 & still utilize ALL of your factory provisions (EGR Valve & Hot-Air Choke Tube - Stock Air Cleaner) Take a look at the ZZ4 Crate Engine Manifold GM# 10185063. This manifold was just used in a CarCraft Magazine manifold shoot-out. This GM BowTie manifold did a pretty good job in the "Lower High-Rise Category" (under 5-Inch). The latest Edelbrock Performer Manifold is patterned & similar to this GM ZZ4 Manifold.
A Stock Oil Splash Shield can even be attached to the bottom – this is a VERY Cool manifold that is often overlooked when building small blocks in the 350 to 400 HP Category.
If interested - I know of a used one for a good price?

sounds like a good replacement for the old L82.

I picked up plenty of those late '70s alum intakes at swapmeets and they share the corvette casting numbers. What i like is the aluminum intakes have the stock cross hatch pattern that looks cool/stock when polished. Some even have the "snow flake" foundry casting mark.
I need to get my list out but anyone can PM me for the year they are intersested in and make me an offer to make it worth my while. I can't give them away but id like to help any forum members that really want an alum intake for cheap.
All have the EGR mount and some have a hot air port for the choke, some do not. None have the divorced choke mount.

Thanks everyone for the info, I know I'm not going to win any stoplight races with this thing, nor do I really care to try I'd like to keep the car as close to factory as possible and modify it using factory pieces (I also still need to pass smog every year), so I guess if I find a cheap enough L82 manifold I'll try it out.

Why do I say that? Many years ago (1980) put an Edelbrock SP2P V4 aluminum manifold in place of the Gm cast iron one on a Nova SS and found the difference in power was nominal. My 78 L-82 is basically stock (except the 2.5 duals and Shorty Headers) and it did 233 RWHP on the dyno. Forum Member, Karol's L-82 with 2.5 duals, Underdrive pulley's, Edelbrock Performer intake, and a cam (unknown which one in place of the L-82 cam) did 248 RWHP on the same dyno and same temp conditions. 15 HP difference with lots of variables BUT I would think that the cam would have the greatest effect of the variables that are different between the 2 L-82 cars and 15 hp is not that much. I would guess that the difference between an aluminum L-82 intake and that Edelbrock Performer is 2-5 HP. Not worth the effort or lose of originality. Just me.
