Attn 700R4 specialist!!!
I have replaced my original 700r4 tranny in my 1982 with a rebuilt junkyard tranny from a 1985. When it was rebuilt i have no idea the car showed 166600 miles. I know it was rebuilt because the case was painted, it had a sticker i could not read, cork pan gasket and had a grey torque convertor that said " balanced". I would say after rebuild it had not been serviced based on the fuzz on the magnet in the pan. That being said the tranny is installed and shifts. My question would be concerning the TV cable adjustment. It is the self adjusting style, if i move it towards the back of the car and press the gas pedal till it clicks it doesn't want to shift. If i then move the throttle linkage forward towards the front of the car it clicks more and will shift at around 2500 rpm. it shifts firm and will chirp 2nd gear under mild throttle. My problem is not knowing if it has a shift kit if i move the tv cable 2 notches forward and it now shifts nicely at 2200 rpm through all gears.
The question is....... should i leave it shift hard at 2500 ish or as it is set now around 2200rpm? i have read if it shifts to early you could burn the clutches. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is to take it to a reputable transmission repair shop (local..not national chain store, if you can avoid it) and ask them to set the TV cable using TV line pressure. With a modified system, there's no way to know how to properly set that adjustment without tapping into the TV pressure line; and, if it's not set properly, it can shorten the life of that tranny considerably.
