Made my first fiberglass repair!!
Yep, dove in head first repairing a couple cracks on my passenger inner fender skirt and it turned out great!....It wasn't nearly as hard as I had always thought. I am putting a different front end on my 77 after a front end collision and I have quite a few repairs to take care of. The only thing I do have a question about is gelcoat......what is it? and how to I apply it to my repairs? I've been looking through the eklers fiberglass repair book and can't really find anything on it.

Gelcoat is somthing that is done when the part was molded. Its not somthing you can replace all you need to do is smooth out your work and build a smooth primer coat to paint on.

Ecklers has spray gelcoat, which can be used to "cover up" glass fibers that may be sticking up on the rough finished surface. I've never used it - just heard about it. Good luck Rod. I'm looking at some major glass work myself. Post some pictures, if you can.

Coat the bare glass with an epoxy primer such as PPG DP LF40. The epoxy primers are easy to spray and seal the bare glass well.

I agree with 74-Roadster. I used the PPG DP40lf and it sealed the bare fibers up perfectly. From what I have read and heard you REALY DON'T want to get mixed up with gel coat it is a nightmare  I did most of the glass work myself and just finished my last coat of primer last night and the body is smooth and straight as an arrow. Just need to wet sand now and then on to paint. Take your time and ask lots of questions and you will be happy with your results.
