Default Quad Jet for 1977 L82

What is the correct model # or s/n for my '77 L82 4 speed? I am sure it will need to be rebuilt by LARS but need to be sure it is the right carb. I bought this car about 10 months ago but getting it warmed up is a pain. Once it gets to 180 F it runs good. A previous owner installed a street cam so it has a lopy idle. Currently running too rich (gasy smell) Non EGR manual choke. It also has an Eldelbrock performer manifold. Rear gear is 370 based upon 3500 rpm's at 70 mph. Loves to drink gas. Thanks!!!

Here are some numbers for you:
1977 L82 Manual Transmission AC & Non AC 17057211
1977 L82 Automatic Transmission 17057210
1977 L48 Manual Transmission 17057203
1977 L48 Automatic Transmission W/AC 17057204
1977 L48 Automatic Transmission 17057202

My findings the only real difference is jetting, the L82 uses K53 primary rods and the L48 used K52 primary rods. Both L82 & L48 uses 77 main jets and CH secondary rods. This is my original 204 carb off my 77. Numbers are just above the secondary shaft on a vertical panel, left side.

Looks like I have a knock off carb. S/N# 17055199 date: 2014. Looks like I will be buying a Edelbrock AVS2 since I already have a performer intake.

17055199 is the 1977 High Performance 800 cfm L82 Vette carb. You won't find a better carb for your car. If you pull it off and install a POS AVS carb to make your car go slower, please send me your L82 Q-Jet and we'll use it on a racecar...

LARS,
1. I would like to keep the carb if it makes sense.
2. Does the 800 CFM flow too much for a street cam?
3. If you can rebuild this carb and make it run correctly for the L82 then I will send it to you.
4. Please note I don't have any specs. on the cam since I didn't install it.
5. The motor doesn't clear out until it hits 1500 rpms.
6. This car is running original cast Iron exhaust headers with 2.5" pipes into some noname mufflers.
7. Does it make sense to go with an electric choke?

I highly recommend you have Lars set your carb up. Be sure to send in the appropriate size USPS box with sufficient packing material to ensure it isn't damaged in-transit (read Lars' instructions please and be sure to drain the fuel from the carb). Include any/all specs you know on the cam, current timing, spark plugs, rear gears, exhaust configuration, etc.

Lars set my carb up back around 2000 and I had him refresh it in 2018 after 18 years of changes and use.

The carb is the factory carb for a stock 350 L82 Vette. 800 cfm is just right. It can be converted to an electric choke, but the hot air choke system works just fine if you have all the components for the system hooked up and operational. Electric choke makes sense if you have a blocked manifold crossover. If your manifold is stock and has not been blocked, and if you have the hot air tubes, there is no reason to go electric. Even a radical cam does not need to be "cleared out" at 1500 rpm - it should run smooth and crisp from idle through WOT if the engine is tuned correctly. I highly recommend that you start with setting your timing up right: Verify that you have initial timing in the mid- to high 'teens with total timing at 36 - 38 degrees (pegged out around 2800 - 3000 rpm). Make sure you have a functional vacuum advance hooked up to manifold vacuum which pulls about 12 degrees of additional timing, thus making the engine idle at about 30 degrees of timing. Once you have verified this, then address the carb: A well-tuned carb will not compensate for badly set timing. You can e-mail me for info about rebuilding the carb and for papers on setting up the timing - be glad to look at it for you, but you need to verify timing first: "90% of all carb problems are ignition problems."

If you want your car to run properly and WELL, you should follow-up with Lars to get the carb rebuilt and also tune the engine per his advice. You will be very pleased with the results.

My 77 L-82 smells and has a hot air choke and sounds like yours. The lopy cam is a model tradition but love this roach. Check your carb number when you rebuild it Lars has the references
