Default Twisted my driveshaft and Trans YOKE!!!

Will a 1350 U-joint yoke fit on the rear diff pinion without cutting and re-glassing the battery box and storage compartments?

I'm running a custom modified (drag racing) TKO 600 5spd trans from Liberty gears and its has a 31 spline output shaft. the only yoke I could get last year when I installed the transmission was a 1310 U-joint yoke with removable caps. I had a 1330 billet yoke on the diff and then I had the stock driveshaft shorten to fit with new trans. the stock driveshaft was a 1330 shaft so I had to use a conversion u-joint at the trans yoke (1330 to1310)

I'm making only 400rwhp/430rwtq but I get good traction and hook hard at the drivestrip. I launch at 3500-3600rpm and even picked up the front tires 5-6". After only 4 passes in the mid-high 11s I ended up twisting the driveshaft, breaking that conversion u-joint, twisted the 1310 yoke and twisting the inner splines on the that 1310 yoke!

the splines on the trans output look good still, and the 1330 billet diff yoke and that spicer u-joint look good.

I found that Mark Williams sells a trans yoke that will fit my trans and has removable caps but its for 1350s! Nobody else in the country makes a 1330 yoke with removable caps for my transmission!! Im planning on getting that 1350 yoke and having a stronger driveshaft custom made. I will have to cut and re-glass the driveshaft tunnel by output of trans to fit the bigger yoke.

Im not sure about diff yoke yet? if I should keep the billet 1330 or upgrade that as well? I'm having a custom shaft made so I can go with either 1330 or 1350 on diff end. I would prefer 1350 but if i have to cut and re-glass that area I think I'll stay with current 1330 billet yoke.

Any input would help me!

I guess my only real question here is..will a 1350 yoke fit at the diff side without modification? lol

The '78-'79 C3s (and probably others) used the 1330 u-joints at the trans and differential yokes. Big blocks C2s and early C3s used 1310s; however, a larger 1330 u-joint GM yoke in a C2 will hit the fiberglass. It is not a problem with clearance on the late '70s C3s. IDK about early '80s C3s.

Dimensions... The 1350 u-joint shares the same width as the 1330 u-joint, so you may be ok to use a 1350 if a 1330 was stock.

Other considerations... The half shafts carry more torque than the driveshaft. Since the half shafts only used 1350 u-joints, 1350s in the driveshaft are over kill. If one has upgraded the half shafts to still larger u-joints, usage of 1350s in the driveshaft makes sense.

I don't want to run another 1310 yoke at trans so the 1350 is my only option there, but i would rather have overkill then another twisted yoke. I can get 1330 yokes for the 31spline but nobody makes a removable cap version. So Mark williams 1350 removable is looking like my only option for trans yoke.

I'm leaning toward keeping my 1330 billet yoke for the diff side. that held up fine.

The size of driveshaft is also going to be an issue. I have a drag vette driveshaft loop already but the clearance through tunnel is the big problem. I guess I'll have to stay at 2.5-2.75" diameter and have it made with stronger material and thicker walls.

Go to a driveline shop, such as http://www.fortwayneclutch.com/ , to have a custom made driveshaft with the Dana 1350 joints. I know they can do it. A few years ago, I had a custom shaft made for one of my early Bronco's. The shaft is actually a double tube shaft. This allows us to use the shaft as a skid plate also. Anyway, this company makes incredibly strong componets at reasonable prices. My double tube shaft was around $600

I don't think the 1350 will clear the tunnel.

I had Ft Wayne clutch build me a 2.5", .095" walled driveshaft with solid 1330 Spicer joints... Was only like $225 shipped.. It has held about 75 10 Sec passes...

I am surprised you are still running the stock driveshaft considering how beefed up your rear diff is.... That was a time bomb waiting to happen...LOL

Black one is stock

Its close, but it clears!

Not sure on C-3's....but you can get 1350's in a C-2. I had a 2-3/4"x.134 wall shaft made by a local shop with Spicer yokes. It's a little tight in there..but it goes a slight angle with the different pinion offset of the Dana 60 IRS setup.

You can get 3" ones in there too...but it's cozy!

I'd get the shaft made with 1350 yokes and use a mix/match joint on the rear for now. That way if you decide to change someday you won't have to mess with shaft.

I ended up deciding to keep the 1330 billet yoke on the diff side. I ordered that mark williams 1350 trans yoke. Once that trans yoke comes in I'll have to check fit and see if I need to clearance the tunnel and re-glass it.

I found a local guy who works at fleet pride truck parts and he makes drag racing shafts on the side but he didn't give me a price yet. He suggested a 3" shaft but I know 2.5" is biggest I can go.

I'll check out Ft wayne clutch too once I get the measurements with new yoke.

I cut my twisted stock shaft in half and measured it today. wall thickness is .095" from factory.

I got my new 1350 mark williams yoke in and found a local shop that is going to make my new shaft. He is going to do it in a 2.75" diameter but the thickest wall he could get was .120", should be done by weekend. I hope my dragvette driveshaft loop fits with the bigger diameter shaft!
