Default Western Hurricane Rims

I just purchased these rims to replace my rally wheels. They are 15" x 8.5" with 3.5" back spacing. I test fitted one already and it fits over the caliper with no interference and there is lots of room between the back of the rim and the rear spring. Are there any other "gotchas" I should check?

Also, since the original rally rims were 15" x 8" with 4" back spacing am I correct that this will widen the track of the car by 2" (.5" less back space and .5" wider rim on both sides)? Will this put a lot of additional strain on my wheel bearings?

Probably should have thought of these questions before I bought the rims, but at $340 for all 4 I just couldn't pass it up.

Default Never miss a photo op!

I have similar wheels, mine were rough cast just like yours and I cleaned them with Eagle wheel cleaner (used to have a picture of that wheel on the bottle). and they would come out bright white. I enjoyed them that way for a few years and then had them powder coated.
It's been a while but I thought they were 15 X 8.5 with a 4 inch backspacing.
The hole for the center cap on mine is 3 & 3/8 and it's been difficult to find the original caps. Your center hole looks even bigger.
You did real good for $85.00 per wheel.

Your only change is going to be , you have a lug centric rim , oem is hub centric , the difference is OEM places the weight load on the axle where aftermarket rims place the load on the lug studs. Will this affect bearings ? Thats a debate for the ages ..

Width wise it is going to push the tire out so watch for clearance on the fender lips

I have mounted one of the rims and used a drywall T-square to check for clearance at the fender lip. It looks like I'll have about .25" clearance running the 235/60/15 tires I currently own.

Just make sure the lip can not contact the tire during any of its travel up like when you go over a bump or that un-seen pot hole

Does anyone know if these wheels can be had in 17" or 18" sizes?

I've ran 10"x 15" US JETS w/ 4" bs on my El Camino. Purchased the car and wheels the same day in 1977. Still runs great, no rear end trouble. The Dealer told me it was going to void my warranty back in 77

Sorry but I brought that thread out from the boneyard. It's not a new thread. But still, I'm curious as I think these wheels would look so killer in 17" or 18" size.

They never made these in larger sizes than 16" but it would look great. I love this style of wheel, have them on my CJ7 and my Wagoneer.

those rings are plastic, i don't see them taking any of the load off the studs. i've never had a problem with lug centric wheels being centered.

Scotty, the ones I received from Tire Rack years back for a set of wheels were made of a metal alloy, probably aluminum.

The American Racing rings appear to be made in steel or plastic.

I agree, I don't think I would be wanting plastic rings.

Good luck... GUSTO

Those look like American Vectors. They were very popular in the late 70's.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111665629696
Car Craft Magazine used them on a Wide Body C3 convertible they did back then and that may have had something to do with their popularity. They were available in some pretty wide widths.

I believe that they are still available from Summit, Tire Rack etc.

Good luck... GUSTO

Yes, I've since discovered that they are indeed American Racing Vector rims.

Didn't think the Vectors had as many spokes as you do, thought the progression went Vectors,Hurricane then turbines in number of blades.
No matter what they are called i think they are perfect for the C3
