Sudden Motor Squeal

Sudden Motor Squeal
I have a 1978 4 speed L82 that I bought last year from a estate sale. The engine was rebulit in 2010 and never run. I changed the oil, filled the cooling system and primed the carb. It fired the first time it rolled over sounded great, I put 200 miles on it total in 3 months just little short runs. Never ran it hard oil pressure holds just over 60 psi, water temp just under 200 then pulling in my driveway it started squealing like a stuck pig. Pulled the belts off and it still squeals. Any ideas?

Clutch in or out, it still squeals. If it has spun a bearing, wouldn't the oil pressure drop? The motor doesn't knock or rattle, other than the loud squealing it runs great.

No a loose or worn bearing will drop oil pressure. A spun bearing can bump it up due to the hole no longer lined up. I have heard them squeal but not for long.

Does the squealing pitch change with rpm? Hi or low pitch? Is it temp sensitive, hot vs cold? Is it constant, regardless? Or comes and goes?
Without any fan belts running in their pulley tracks, that pretty much leaves internal engine bearings, distributor, or throw-out bearing if the squeal comes from the engine area.
It was sudden too?

Main bearing. The only time I've had a squeal that wasn't belt related, it was a main bearing. Now bear in mind I hope for your sake that it's not, and some one could prove different, but from my luck and experience it sounds like a main. Good luck on your project.

The way I found it was that I was spraying belt dressing on the belts trying to stop the noise and got some behind the balancer and the noise went away. The rubber was easy to see sticking out of the back of the balancer. Sure hope it is the same thing for you. Good luck.

Check the flywheel and starter area. If it's constant something turning has made contact. Probably not internel unless crank endplay wasn't checked during the rebuild. Make sure the flywheel hasn't moved forward enough to contact something in the bell housing.

Okay, the squeal is coming from the front of the crankshaft. The timing chain cover is discolored around the crankshaft and has a small oil leak. Looks like metal dust on the shaft.

Found it!! The gasket under the carburetor spacer had blown out. I have never seen this one before, the squeal sounded like it was coming from the front of the motor. I still have to pull and replace the timing chain cover seal then all should be good for a little while.
Thanks for all the help, you guys are great.
