Default Clutch fan test ??

Please let me know how to test a fan clutch...I have one now that spins for about ten seconds after engine is shut off and I understand that means it is not good..? If I go to junk yard, engines will not be running...is there a way to test them by hand? thanks

I cant think of a test you can run on an nonrunning engine accept to make sure fan does not wobble on the shaft and fan turns somewhat freely.

A stiff turning fan will sound like a wind tunnel when you race the engine

Stevo;

The only reliable test of a fan clutch is the method you describe. Besides that, you'll be very lucky indeed to find a fan clutch worth having in a wrecking yard. It's one of those parts that should be replaced with a new unit. Even if the yard you get the used clutch from lets you get another if the one you get is bad, you still get to go through the replacement process again. And again. And again. IMO, you're wasting your time with anything but a new unit.

I thought that when the car is cold the fan should be harder to turn. Once the car is up to temperature the clutch/fluid should allow the fan to turn easier.

Am I all wet here?

One rule of thumb (finger actually) that I read once.....

Spin the fan with one finger (make sure the engine is off :rolleyes:). The fan should NOT spin more than two revolutions. Mine turns only about once.

I agree, 10 seconds after shutting down is WAY too long.

You have that backwards, when the clutch gets hot it locks up, and when it's cold the clutch is loose. So if you turn the car off before it gets hot your fan will spin for a while. If you turn it off after it gets hot the fan should stop almost right away.
