502 Ram Jet / "Tall" L88 Hood
I'm going to install a 502 Ram Jet crate engine into my 1975 L-82 4-speed Coupe. After days of reading through posts to find out what hood will fit, I'm more confused than ever. I called Eckler's to ask about what they call a L88 STYLE TALL (Part #59649) hood and if it would work. All they could do is give me a dimension. ACI the same story. Does any one actually own the 502 Ram Jet in a C3 with an "off the shelf" hood? It doesn't have to be an L88 style hood.
Thanks in advance!
Hood can be found here

That's a lot of hood.
I have the regular or "non-tall" L88 hood. Not sure if it is an Eckler's piece or who made it. Came with the car. But it does have the 2.75" to 3" rise vs. the extreme 4" rise on this hood.
If I'm being honest, a regular L88 hood clears A LOT of stuff. I have an LT-1 intake on mine and it doesn't even come CLOSE to the hood. Heck...before my engine build I was looking at a Weiand supercharger and even THAT might have fit under the thing.
The regular L88 hood is tall enough to be very visible in driving. It is about the perfect height, because its lines blend in with the fenders when looking out.
If the hood had another 1.5" on the bulge, I think that would be a real pain in the **** when driving. Just my opinion.
I'd be pretty surprised if the regular L88 hood doesn't clear the vast majority of engines/options out there. Unless you're going crazy extreme with your intake or something, I'd think you'd be fine with the regular hood.

Take a look at ajrothm tall L88 hood. Its tuff lookin. He probably created a thread about it.
Just order it from Vanacor and be done with it. Assuming the taller option will clear this engine config.

I know the height of the 'regular' L88 Eckler's hood is 4 1/8 inch above the fender drip rails to the underside at the normal carb c/l position. I have one on my 75. It clears the 2x4 plus air cleaners shown in my avatar. I have the intake off and will measure the height from the 'china wall' to the top of the air cleaners I have been using. I know they had about 1/4 inch or less at the a/c mounting studs. One of the wing nuts rubbed if it was oriented front-to-rear.

I laid a straight edge along the tops of the two air cleaner hold-down studs and measured up from the sealing surface on the manifold to the straight edge. The measurement is 10 1/2 inches at the front. the back is of course higher. Hope this helps.

A word of caution, Carburetor mount surface on the intake is not parallel with its mounting plane on the engine. The engine is on angle with the front of the engine higher than the rear while the carbs are mounted to optimize fuel leveling and slosh. The RamJet 502 intake is on the same plane as the engine mount. Bottom line is, don't be fooled by extending a straight edge forward from the top of an aircleaner to the china wall position and measuring that height. The RamJet intake will project approximately 1-1 1/2 inches higher.
My old Eckler L-88 hood would not close on the RamJet intake. I had to cut the top off the rise and raise it. I took a 1/2" hose and laid it over the highest point of the RamJet intake just behind the Throttle Body and used Popsicle sticks to hold it into position as I laid new fiberglass filling the void. (see pic below). I believe Vanacor made a 5+" hood that would clear, but I did not like its profile. Don't think they are available now.
If I had it to do over, I would opt for a different intake design or cut the intake ports down to fit, similar to the guy with the C2, but not as much. It would not impact performance appreciably. I will post a picture of an alternative intake that is better and will fit later.
This is a picture of the C2. I met him down at the NCM a few years ago and took this picture
