My '77 does the same. Hard to start shortly after a good warm weather drive. I am not sure what causes this but some have suggested that the plugs on the bottom of the float bowl/mid body of the carb. are leaking. I have not properly checked mine yet. maybe before you check all of that, make sure you gas cap is still on the car and not leaking .... not that I've ever done something that silly as leave it on top of a fuel pump at a Texaco station in Maltby.... but I've heard dumb people do things like that

I had the same issue and searched many forums. It turned out to be my fuel line from my pump to the carb. I changed my fuel line to a teflon lined hose and the smell hasnt came back.
Unless you still have the factory line of coarse.
