Default Water temperature gauge reading?

Advice please! I have a 82 crossfire and the water temperature gauge has started reading 120 after the car warms up and stays there, my rpm are running around 1200 at idle some times it will drop down to around 800 but after driving it around the block it idles back up to 1200. I replaced the temp sensor and plug and no change. pulled the gauge cluster out and everything looks normal. not as worried about the water gauge as i am about the idle. but i think the gauge is keeping the computer from letting the car idle down. the idle have been up sense the gauge started reading 120 max. . .Advice please...

Have you tried confirming the water temperature as being accurate with a IR gun? If it is accurate your thermostat is stuck open and will effect the computers functions.

Your thermostat has likely stuck OPEN so that there is no regulation of coolant flow to manage water temps. It is also possible that you are low on coolant and there is none getting to the sensor...but I don't think that's your problem. It's still a good thing to check, anyway.

It sounds like a stuck thermostat. I tried a 160* in my 82 and it did the something. 180*-190* is about as low as you can go before the computer will let it idle down.
