Depends on which shifter you have... Stock? Hurst? Other?

(and synchro condition)

Stock shifter, don't know the condition of the synchro.

Happened to me last month with my '72. I removed the shifter boot and rubber "plate", and CLEANED the heck out of the shifter mechanisim. I used brake cleaner, and alot of it. Then I sprayed lubricant in there and SSHAZZZAMMM, it works!! A little light lithium grease and we're rockin' and rollin' backwards like day 1. Good Luck!

You should also check the reverse lock-out (if it is there). There should be a cable that runs from the steering column to the transmission. Sometimes the cable will bind making it difficult to shift into reverse. If you need mor info on this let me know.

My cable got bent just a touch but that was enough to keep it from going into reverse. The cable is unhooked and probably should be removed and replace. I like the safety/security feature of the lock out but it is nice not having to put it rev to remove the key.

I have the same problem...sometimes I have to start the car again and put it in first gear to free up the mechanism and then it goes into reverse.

Taking off the cable is sounds like a good idea...does removing it have any
other implications....I'm careful enough not to start the car with it
in gear...this might solve my problem too. :yesnod:

Start it once in gear and you will never do it again. Don't ask me how I know. :bb Plus I think it is the neutral safety switch that keeps you from doing that, but alas, that too is unhooked on my car.

Maybe your clutch needs to be adjusted. Unlike modern hydraulic clutches - mechanical clutches have to be adjusted once in a while.

Even some Hyd clutchs need to be adjusted.

Try to shift into another gear before trying reverse. If it still does that, it's probably because of the syncros.

My clutch is brand new. What a difference it makes. I don't have any problems with any other gears, just reverse. And its not the push up into reverse that is the problem, it is the movement to the left before the push up into reverse that is really difficult.
