Default '81 Door Latch Issue

I installed a new left door latch on Sunday. Every thing went fine until I closed the door after install. The door latched closed before it lined up with the body. When the old one was in, the door lined up fine with the rest of the body. I adjusted the striker and ended up moving it in as far as it would go and the door still doesn't line up right. I'm still discussing the issue with the company I bought it from, but figured I'd solicit suggestions from here as well.

I'm wondering, and I'm not sure how to describe this, but you can see edges of the latch beyond the edge of the door; should they be lined up better? Particularly in the back where the striker would hit.

What company did you buy the latch from. Is it an import made latch? What was wrong with the original latch? From your pic it appears that your door was not originally lined up as indicatd by the missing paint on the door's edge. I'm watching this thread as I hav issues with my driver's side door/latch. Sorry I could not help. Answers to your question will be forthcoming.

Did you try moving to pin out?

I did not check to see where the latch was made. The original quit...latching. I went to drive the car, got in and shut the door it wouldn't latch. As for the paint, the door wasn't rubbing, its just a bad paint job.

Pete is talking about the striker pin in the door jamb... behind you.

Question.. when you shut the door is the latch click twice? When you push the door closed easy you'll here two clicks.

wouldn't it go in, not out? since door needs to "close" more?

Striker pin, gotchya, I have moved that in (towards the passenger side) as far as it'll go. I was cleaning up the old one and trying to compare it to the new one. While playing with the new latch I realized it locks twice, so I am thinking it was only locking the first time. However, pushing on the door never made it close any further (even before I moved the striker in). I'm going to play with the striker and maybe remove it so I can actually see how its sliding into the latch (make sure its fitting right).

Well, the striker was actually moved back outwards, but this was due to the latch not making it past the "safety" latch. When all of this started and the door wasn't closing in far enough, yes, I moved the striker IN to get it to closer closer to the body. Make sense?

I had the same problem, moving the pin OUT solved it.
