Default Looking for a camshaft

Hi erveryone,
I am looking for a camshaft, I just don't know which one...

My car is a 1979 L82, bone sock except for 72 heads and a MSD ignition. Which camshaft can I chose to gain e little power, but without changing anything else in the engine ?

Thanks guys for any hint !

Something in the 2teens range @050 duration
Lunati 256 voodoo works well.
Replace your tired valve springs for sure may as well do seals while youre there. MAkes great torque vacuum good idle. Throw some headers on it better curve on the dist it will really wake up!

it's the HIGH ENERGY 268H
google shows it at jegs.
IMO the cheaper cams are no better than your stock L82 cam, if it is in good shape.

Your stock cam is actually a good cam. It does need compression. Since your heads are not factory best bang for the buck is definetly better heads with smaller chambers. The Dart SHP 180 heads with 64CC chambers would be a great upgrade and get you a lot more than any cam upgrade.

Cant get the H.E. cams anymore, those worked good and didnt wear parts out quick. That 286 was a good one.

If I had to buy a FT Id go with some of the smaller co.s out there that may have better ability to QC Isky Crower Crane pieces Schneider etc. Ask where ther cores come from. Way back when you could buy a Summit or P.A.W. regrind and drive em forever not sure if Id do it today.

That's the thing, my stock cam is dead...
I don't really want to improve my power, but keep the same level of performance at the best price would be my aim.

So I won't change heads, intake and everything else, too expensive.

So according to you, this one would fit well ?

Also, to everyone: thanks to everyone !!

That cam is a good one - it has less duration and tighter lobe centers, which will improve torque at the slight expense of upper rpm HP.

Alternately, if your L82 cam were ok for reuse, advancing that cam by 5 degrees would do the same thing but keep the upper rpm.

Say what???

You can probably get a stock l82 ground cam. I bought a comp cam xtreme energy cam and like it. However, if I do it again I will try a Lunati Voodo cam. You can keep a mild cam and take advantage of modern technology at the same time.

Well, if I can gain a little torque and/or hp, I won't mind... Kidding, but i am limited by my budget.

Looks like I'm going to buy the Comp 268 h with lifters. My L82 cam is NOT ok to reuse, he is completely worn out.

the summit cam pkg is ok,but the comp extreme energy cams will make more power.check compcams website to see what you like.you can swap new springs in with a spark plug adapter and a air compressor and a spring compressor tool.get a new timing chain also.

If you are going to change only the cam,
you might want to think about 1.6 RRs.

That way you can run a short cam, and still have
some lift or top end hp.

The RRs are cooler and quieter too!

Not to rock the boat but if one goes with one of those "extreme", or fast ramp cams stay with a 1.5 rocker. If you go up in ratio better upgrade the springs or youll run into valve float real soon which can destroy lobes among other things. rather use a slightly gentler ramp and "give up that 10" and have it live while stilll making better power than stock.

Famous engine builder Joe Sherman speaks highly of the ISKY 264-Megacam .450" 214 214 108LSA I don't know about the springs, so check into that, i'm thinking stock springs will be OK as it is an older grind.
If the car really is bone stock, headers and true dual exhaust should be on the "to do" list.

I bought a 72 stock 350 automatic that the PO put a Crane CS 268-10 High Energy cam in. I really can't compare to stock or tell you that it is better than stock. The car runs pretty good though. My other car is a 69 427/435 so if I compare it to the 69 the 72 is a dog but I bought it because it is more driveable and is a convertible.
