Default 1976 Corvette speedometer and odometer quit working

My corvette was operating normally and I stopped for gas. When I started it back up, the speedometer and odometer did not work as I drove away. Please help me with what I could be looking at!!!

they operate off a cable from the transmission to the spedo, so, either the cable is bad, spedo is bad, or the gears in transmission are bad.. You have to weed out what is good to fix the bad.

disconnect the cable at the transmission, with cable pushed all the way in the housing, attach a drill and see if the spedo moves, you will have to try forward or reverse on the drill. If it moves the problem is in towards the transmission. If the it doesn't move, the problem is toward the spedo. It could be loose at the trans, putting slack in the cable and not hooking up to move anything.

You can turn the cable quick enough with your finger and thumb. I just fixed my speedo with same problem as yours by replacing the nylon driven gear at the end of the cable. The old gear kind slipped off the end of the cable with ease. The new one snapped into place. I suspect the old gear rounded out somewhat and wouldn't spin the cable. New gear cost about $20. Worth a try before tearing into anything else.

Careful with the routing of the cable. If it gets too close to the exhaust, and it is going to be close, it will fry the plastic housing, crack the internal casing and fup (freeze) the cable - and your odometer and speedo won't work. Ask me how I know
