Ran Into My EX-Best Friend Today.
I haven't talked to him ever since that night I was over at his garage and he and another fellow started ripping on me and my car. That was probably around Christmas time. I never ran into him because for the past few months I've been in the garage working on the car. For those of you who don't know who I'm talking about these guys would constantly bust on me about building a big block, twisting my car in half, and generally telling me that it's never going to run as good as if I had built a small block.
So I took the 'Vette out for a spin today (no hood of course) after installing the mufflers and leaning out the carburetor (running excellent!). I was almost to the school where I usually pull in and shut her down to check for leaks and what not. I passed a blue Celebrity and in my rearview mirror I could see him pull a U-turn in the middle of the road. So I pull in and this car follows me. Turns out it's my ex-best friend Ryan. So I shut her down. He asked me "where's my hood etc..". I told him it wouldn't shut. I kept the answers short and to the point and just wanted him to leave.
He asked me if my uncle built the motor for me (my uncle was supposed to help). I told him that I built the entire thing myself, he seemed pretty impressed. Then he got a little snoopy. He asked me "so what cam are you running?" I told him "it's a solid flat tappet, it really seems to open and close the valves rather nicely." Then he wanted to know the duration and the lift. I was like "I'm really not sure, I'd have to look that up" (even though I have the cam specs pretty much memorized) :D. Then he started asking about my heads. "So what size valves do you have", my response was "yea, there's valves in there :D". Then he was like "ohh"....I'm pretty sure he got the message. He said "Well, I'm gonna get going", I said "ok". He's like "take it easy buddy." My response "yep".
I fired up the beast and I could seem him watching me leave. So I kept it in first gear and when I got to 2000RPMs I smashed the gas to the floor revved out first banged second and shut her down. His time's coming :).
Turns out he's building a 318 Mopar engine to put in his S10 . Compression ratio of about 9:1. Needless to say, I'll probably suck him right up my tail pipe if (and when) we race.

O Kiss and make-up, life is to short to **** each other off.
I have to agree with 73-454. I do not know what all happened to you and your ex-friend, but are a few cracks on your car worth a friendship?
My friends and I crack on each other's cars all the time. It's all in good fun.
Besides, why get mad at the jokes? In the end, when you put that BB to work, and waste that S-10, then all cracks will be avenged, and anyone that made fun of you will be eating crow!
P.S. MOPAR = Move Over, People Are Racing! (Get the idea?)

Not to bust your chops, but he made the first move. Probably wanted to be friends again. My buddies and I rip on each other for everthing. The only thing sacred, are our kids. The wives aren't even safe.
That's what friends are for.

A mopar in a truck, :U :U
Or
A big block in a Vette
If he is trying to be your friend again, you did good, maybe he will start being nice to you now...
If not, he's just another looser

if a guy is negative all the time, who needs him?
10% negative OK, keeps you on your toes.
All negative is a waste of time.

One other thing I feel compelled to comment on is all of the talk that a Big Block will always beat a small block. Unfortunately, it is not that simple, and not always the case.
First, while BB's of the past were fast, SB's of today can compete with them, due to advances in modern technology. Saying otherwise can be proven wrong. Using the school of thought that a small block can't beat a big block, the same could be said of a 4 or 6 cylinder vs an 8 cylinder. My vette has a 350 V-8, but there are dozens of 4 and 6 bangers that could easily whip me. Ex. - A porsche is a very fast car, that uses a 6 cylinder. However, I would not stand a chance. The Subaru (I HATE RICE CARS!) WRX has 227 hp from a turbocharged 4 banger, and it would give me a run for the money. These cars would also embarass many other old V-8 powered cars.
I will say that a Big Block has more POTENTIAL than a small block. That is the key. Built exactly the same, the bigger cubes will win over a small block.
Now, as far as your ex-friend. I think you will stomp him for several reasons. You have a nice built Big Block, in a vette that is designed for performance(better suspension, posi-traction, etc..)
Your friend is putting a 318 in an S-10. First, the 318 is fine as a workhorse. I've owned several, that were good and reliable. Powerwise, they suck. The heads are a big negative on these engines. If he were inclined to go the mopar route, a 340 or 360 would be a better starting point. Second, an S-10 is a pickup. It is just that, a truck, that has a chasis not designed for performance but hauling and pulling. Third, if he did manage to get some decent hp from that 318, he would still have problems with traction. A pickup is lighter over the back wheels than a car, and with a limited slip, he is really at a disadvantage.
So, that is my .02 worth. A Big block only has more potential than a small block, and other factors such as weight, gearing, suspension, .... have to be accounted for. Finally, never underestimate an opponent!
