Default Best Muffler for Stock 79 L82

I recently got my first Vette, a 79 L82 with just 69k miles on the clock. The car is stock right now and I am not interested in heads and cam etc as I'll stick a stoker crate engine in it eventually if I want bigger power. I'd like to wake it up a bit though and get a slightly beefier exhaust note.

I am planning to have the Q jet re built and a good tune up but would like to add a dual exhaust system using the existing manifolds if possible. My local exhaust guy will fabricate the pipe work but suggested either Flowmasters or Magnaflow mufflers.

Any thoughts or experience on the best choice for a little extra hp boost and a decent exhaust sound for a stock L82?

Seems like most on the forum are going with the Corvette Central true dual exhaust with hideaway Magnaflow system. You can bolt it right up to your existing exhaust manifold (no problem) so you can eliminate a pipe fabricator if you want to do it yourself. I did mine without a lift.

They are running a free shipping coupon now so you can save $$.

If you want noise I guess the Flowmaster would be for you. Be advised that the company states on their website that there is a drone at certain RPM, so be forewarned.

I just pulled 2 flowmasters , and put in the Magnaflows what a difference no more annoying resonance .. I hated those mufflers !! The magna are a lot deeper toned and a constant deep tone through out the rpm ranges.

Bingo, maybe here is a place to get a good deal on some used flowmasters since he just pulled his. I am very glad or lucky that I do not get the resonance or "drone" with mine

more important is to use 2 1/2 pipe. mufflers are less critical

What does "hideaway" means?

Hideaway means it is the same setup as stock. The muffler tip is bent downwards. It is just like your stock exhaust. Non-hideaway are straight exit tips.

Best bet is get rid of the stock manifolds, Install a set of headers, 2 1/2" dual exhaust with free flowing mufflers. Best option since your looking for a HP boost. and changing the exhaust system. A Performance distributor recurve will increase the SOTP feel of the car as much as the performance exhaust for about $10 while your at it.

You wont see 5 hp difference between your 2 muffler options, so listen to both types and decide what sounds better to you.
If you go Flowmaster, you will need to pick the right model (there are quite a few) and probably run an x pipe if you want to avoid any droning in the exhaust.
Done properly though, I don't think anythings sounds better than a set of Flowmasters.

Someone actually went to a dyno and tried both. About 8hp in this case.

So the choice is "loudness" or more hp

yeah but a loud muffler will "feel" like you have more HP.

Imagine the power difference on a car with a lot more motor...
