Default Help on Intake 454

Hi everyone, I have a 76 B/B 454 with a Q jet ad 3:08 gears and stock casting #340218 Intake manifold, crane cam w/529 Intake 525 Exhause lift and 278 and 290 duration, looking to upgrade to a alm. \ manifold and holley carb.
#1 -Don't know if it's a oval or rect. port
#2 -What manifold and size carb would work.

I'm sure your mainfold is a oval port. I'm not sure about your hood clearance. Maybe a performer or weiand dual plane. You might only be able to use a torker II. It's a 1/4 taller than stock. A holley 750 3310 vac secondary should work great on your motor. Do you have headers?

Thanks for he Info. I know it's a truck engine but the work that was done brought it to life with a lot of power and torque. I kind of remember a oval port but I'm not sure (I'm getting old) ha ha. No headers and I also have the B/ B hood. I know that a change of carb/manifold will brighten my day when I hammer it. Joe

If you currently have a cast iron intake, you have oval port heads. GM never made a cast iron intake for rect port heads.

The BB's up to 75 were the large oval port heads. After that and the trucks were considered the peanut port heads. Much smaller that the large oval port heads. The aftermarket manifolds are made for the large oval ports, but will work on the peanut ports, just a mismatch.

As far as combo's there are numerous posts in the archives on this topic as to what will fit and what will not. I would use a performer or the stealth and seriously consider the new Holley Avenger series. They work great for street use.

I don't think GM made an alum oval port Holley intake.

They made Alum low rise intakes for Qjet. #'s 849, 801, and 793 with oval ports. And rec port for Holley's 569 and 163.

Try to research or look back on the papers for the engine work. Was there a valve job where the heads were off and did the shop mill the heads and/or manifold. If so, you might have a problem with a different manifold. Just a thought.

If you have a high rise hood like L-88 get a high rise intake. Truck heads have smaller ports & an Edel. Performer will work fine. 750.

Info message for smokingjoe,

I have a 73 with the 454. I have measured and experimented with almost all combos for the intakes and carbs. Here is the poop...

- With a Q-Jet the Edelbrock performer and RPM or the Weiand Stealth are too tall for a 454 in a 73 or 74 even with the cowl induction hood.

- You can put an adaptor for that is .8" tall (standard one) and install a Holley Avenger 770 cfm and with a 2" air filter you wil have 3/8" clearance from the air cleaner to the top of the hood. Close but fits fine.

- The Edelbrock Torker 2 manifold and a Holley Avenger based upon the 4150 design will fit fine under the stock hood using up to a 3" air cleaner. The Torker is only 3/8" taller than stock and is the ONLY aftermarket manifold that will fit. Don't be misled about this being a crap manifold. True - the torque is about 2500 +, but it is a smooth running manifold.

- As quoted in the forum discussions there are several GM alum. spreadbore manifolds that will fit with a Q-Jet. Believe the post was made by Terry TRW.

- If you go to any of the aftermarket alum. with a Q-Jet or Holley or Demon you will have to go to an L-88 hood or such.

The hood will be the determinine factor on what you want to do. Tag me back via e-mail if you have points you want to discuss.

Thanks i am sure I had the small oval port heads, but with the portng and the gasket matching they opened up some. The hood will not be any trouble i have the B/B hood. I think the Edel. Performer- Edelbrock Torker 2 manifold and a Holley Avenger,a vac. sec. Holley will work fine.
