Default Keisler RS400 wont go into gear... What did I do wrong?

I installed the clutch they included and a new pressure plate and flywheel before I installed the engine. I installed my RS400 a few weeks ago and had extra play in the pedal before it began to engage the clutch and I could not put it into gear. To take up the slack I bought an adjustable linkage, which I finally got and installed just now. With the slack/play taken out of the pedal's travel I can engage the clutch as soon as I start pressing the pedal... I still cannot shift into gear.

I installed the throwout bearing correctly (based off of this http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/fi...ring_instr.pdf)

I used this 153 tooth flywheel

I used this(pretty sure this one) Pressure plate

I have read some threads where people needed to get a longer pivot ball stud??? Could this be it, or is it something else... how would I know? If I do need a different pivot ball stud... God help me... I do not have a removable crossmember and that transmission is a TIGHT fit

Oh yeah.. movers are coming to pack up my House on Monday....................... But we will be camping out untill we fly out on the 29th So I may be taking some tools on the plane :-/

If you can put it in gear with the engine turned off, but can't put it in gear with your motor running your ball stud is to short

Any recommendations on what I should look for/check out?

You are saying that you can't even jam it into any gear with the motor turned off? Can you move the handle? If the shifting block and your handle is mounted right you should be able to put it in all 5 gears and reverse with the motor off not even using the clutch

I can't move it into 1st or reverse... I can bumb it towards 2,4,5th but I don't think the throw is that short.. plus it doesn't feel locked in.. When I bump it into 3rd it just falls right back out. This is all with the engine off...

I'll try it with it running after dinner. When I did my cam break in last monday I noticed that the tail shaft spun while the engine ran (driveshaft not installed). I was able to stop it by hand.. but it spun none the less.. is that normal or an issue? Obviously I'm not a transmission guru and I appreciate all the help, Thanks!

My TKO600 was dropped off a four by FedEx and I had to pull cover plate off shifter to get it out of 1st and reverse gears. I first thought trans was blown up but, after further inspection found problem. I don't think you will be able to solve problem without pulling inspection cover and looking for same problem. Good luck!

I just tried it with it running.. Same thing

I guess I'll take the shifter cover plate off and see what is going on..hope thats it

::edit:: wait that requires I pull the transmission... anything short of pulling it that I can do?

I took keislers offset shift tower off and I can shift gears by hand through the side hole in the cover. I suspect it was bound up when I reinstalled the tower originally.. well I'll try to reinstall and see how it goes. Thanks for the help!

That was it! I ran through the gears by hand, went back to neutral, reinstalled the shift tower (correctly) and now she works!

You lucked out, only other thing it could be was a tight pilot bushing which means doing it all over most times. Enjoy

Glad you found the problem without posting a long-winded condemnation of Keisler, like some folks would have done.

I had been considering an RS400 for my mild 327, but of the three e-mails I've sent them over the past two weeks, only one has been answered, and that was from Shafi saying he was out of the office.

On a positive note, I have been using their "Super Duty" 621 11-inch bellhousing, and I am very pleased. Casting and machining are first rate, and run out was only .005". I bought it directly from Jeff at Keisler one month after a price increase, but he sold it to me at the old price.
